The Explorer lost my reservation or was overbooked and as a result they moved me to the Capital Suites. It was a poor night that was going to get much worse.
I entered the room and found that it was extremely hot, which is not uncommon during the winter months. I tried everything within my capabilities, and then phoned downstairs for assistance, specifically asking for maintenance assistance. The front desk girl asked me if it tried moving the little bar on the thermostat, I told her yes of course, only for her to ask if I wanted a fan. I responded that I didn't want to blow the hot air around, that I actually wanted it to get cooler. She then asked if I could open the window, to make it cooler. Keep in mind this is November in Yellowknife, I asked if the hotel had maintenance personnel, her reply was that although at work the maintenance man was not capable of helping.
I resigned myself to not having the assistance needed and opened the window, only to have two people fighting on the stoop of their door in the low-rent tenement next door. The worst night on the road ever, period, hands-down.More
