Splendid scenery. Incredible shoreline with cliffs. Wanted to hike up mountain to see more but was starting to rain. Campground there in a beautiful location.

If you can spare a couple hours or better yet an overnight while on the Cabot trail, be sure to visit Meat Cove!! It is a remote and stunning place with a grassy clifftop overlooking a beautiful stoney beach with clear waters and classic views of the Cape Breton coast. We camped one night and absolutely loved it. All of the sites are close together on a grassy clifftop so there is not much privacy, but everyone is in such a great mood that there is a lovely communal atmosphere and it is nice to chat with neighbours or just keep to yourself and take in the view. No reservations and sites are first come first served, but there was space for everyone. The campground is well-run with firewood available, the cute chowder hut nearby (we didn't try it but heard good things) and kayaks for rent. Justin was very helpful with hiking tips (several great trails nearby). We swam at the beach and found surprisingly warm water. We had beautiful weather but I can see it getting windy on the cliff so bring extra tent stakes and some courage (or rent one of the cute cottages..). Bathrooms were somewhat basic but far, far outweighed by all the positives of visiting this unique place. A major highlight on the Cabot Trail, completely worth the somewhat bumpy unpaved road to get there.

You really must make the trip for the scenery and a good hike or two. But, unless you have a camper with toilet/shower/water/kitchen I would strongly discourage staying there. The bathroom is disgusting. The shower a mere trickle. The water station is a mud pit. All of it looked unhealthy. Couldn't get myself into a real shower quick enough. The restaurant was not open as expected/advertised. This meant driving BACK out and back in again. That's an extra hour on the road that didn't have to happen if we had known.

All of that said, this is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been and is not to be missed. Go early, spend the day. When you come out, have a nice meal at the Bay St. Lawrence Community Center and Cafe. And make sure you know where you will sleep that night before you go in.

Along windy drive on a rutted dirt road. We had a 4 wheel drive jeep, but there were mostly two wheel drive cars that all made the trip just fine. A great view of the ocean, many Northern Gannets diving for fish, and while we did not see whales, others have reported them. Not much parking. A very small store with very limited necessities, a camping area that is closed to non-campers but has a great view. A great looking beach that is a hike down the side of the cliffs that we did not go to. Also saw a cool waterfall in the distance that it looked like you could walk to.

Meat Cove lies on the north coast of Cape Breton, a ways off the Cabot Trail, but the scenery is stunning. There's not much there, a campground, a chowder hut, and a small café down the road a little way. The scenery is really the draw. If you happen to be camping, this would be a place to pull up and stay for a day or two...just decompress and enjoy the peacefulness.
