“Nothing special, but misleading”
Reviewed 13 November 2013

Premier. Nope. Executive. Nope. High quality. Nope. Prior to arriving guests are asked to let the property know the time of arrival since there is typically no one on site constantly (so I understood from the email). That wasn't a problem, nor was the fact that there is no staff on site on the weekend except sporadically. The room was fine, clean, adequately large but IT IS NOT A SUITE. The room was a largish queen bedroom with a desk and chair and two sofa chairs. No elevator (not a problem for us), so we had to carry our suitcases up the stairs. Parking is "hidden". Easy to find once it's explained but otherwise invisible, behind the building, off the main street whereas the hotel entrance is off the side street (hotel is on a corner). Staff were friendly. Breakfast was basic ordinary, and, for the three days we were there it looked as if the pastry choices for breakfast were never changed. Breakfast is on the counter or in the fridge. Coffee is made by the first guest to come down in the morning and is at best tasteless. If they advertised themselves as ordinary then they'd get a higher rating from me. This place is adequate and ordinary but nothing special.

I am very sorry you were not happy with the Spanish Bay Inn, I understand your comments regarding no one on site all the time, this is something we will have to re-visit, we have mostly repeat guests that are familiar with the place so staff being on an on-call bases works for those. This however does not help folks such as yourself, a first time visitor.
Again I am vey sorry your stay was not what you had hoped for, please except my apologizes and I hope this does not deter you from returning to the area.
Kindest Regards Linda MacKinnon

Tucked right in downtown Sydney, you walk right off the street into a historic and very clean and tidy Inn. Friendly staff, very clean rooms with an awesome bed. Set no alarm and you'll sleep in ! I would definitely recommend this Inn to friends as it was recommended to me. Price was great and a fix your own breakfast with the morning paper makes one feel at home.

The Spanish Bay Inn is a delightful place to stay. The room we stayed in was very, very clean and tastefully decorated. The staff are very friendly and accommodating. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone. The price was great, as I have stayed in places not nearly as nice for a lot more money.

We stayed at this inn for three nights. Note that the inn has 2-3 parking slots out front in Pitt street and the main parking area is off the Esplanade. This main parking area is not signposted and looks like it might be another company's parking lot but the left-hand side (the hard surface area) belongs to the inn. There is sufficient space for ~7 cars.

We were quickly checked in and into our room (7). The inn tends to leave most of the unoccupied rooms with their doors open so it is easy to be nosy and see what the other rooms are like. Ours had a sleigh bed, which required mountaineering skills to get into as it seemed so high. Although there was a bedside cabinet one side of the bed, there was nothing the other side - very annoying. We ended up using an armchair as a bedside cabinet, also very handy for giving us a leg-up into bed! The floor was wooden and the room had lovely dark wood furniture. The TV was the old fashioned tube type - some rooms have a flat screen TV. Our TV did not have a sleep facility. We also had a fridge, microwave and coffee/tea making facilities. However the coffee supplies were not replenished during our stay - we had to keep raiding the nearby laundry room. The room was dark as it had only one window. We did have a sea view, including a view of the nearby Holiday Inn. The room had 3 waste bins but instructions provided implied there should be 4. The room had no full length mirror which was frustrating. One of the good features of the room was a towel rail on the back of the bathroom door instead of the more usual hook. A great idea was the toilet roll holder stand - see picture! The user could place it in the most suitable position for themselves rather than having to distort their body reaching around behind them or stretching half-way across the bathroom as happens in many other hotel bathrooms.

Breakfast is do-it-yourself. First person down puts the coffee on, then you help yourself to orange juice, yogurts and milk from the fridge. Nearby, on a cabinet are 3 cereal choices and usually a wide selection of breads and bagels. Sometimes there are pastries/scones. Unfortunately, on our second morning, we opened one of the bags of bread to find it had gone mouldy so we left that slice and the rest of the pack at reception - there usually is nobody around until about 0900. After your breakfast you are supposed to place your plates and utensils in the dishwasher. However, on the second morning the dishwasher did not appear to have been emptied since the previous day. After the mouldy bread incident, there were only two types of bread/bagel available on the 3rd morning so we assume there had been a purge! Fresh fruit was available. All-in-all, rather limited - we had expected much better from other reviews.

It was great having access to free laundry facilities where we could get our clothes washed and dried.

The shower and bath water temperature controls took a while to sort out. Turning the tap/lever half-way to the three o'clock position seemed to give the hottest water setting, compared with the full on six o'clock position.

Wifi worked great.

There was not a great range of restaurants within walking distance. We could find only one gift shop. Sydney still seems to be developing in terms of a good tourist destination.

The pictures on the website make the Spanish Bay Inn look like a semi-luxurious alternative to cheaper hotels in the area. This is not actually the case. Our room was crammed full of furniture that we continually bumped into or maneuvered around. The space was very small. Our view was of an ugly building next to the parking lot. We had to dust the headboard of the bed ourselves (caked in dust). There were inexplicable flies near one of the windows. Other issues, like minimal parking, don't really need to be mentioned. The bottom line -- we paid more than we wanted to pay for something that was probably not as good as the Holiday Inn next door. (Customer service was good though.)

I would like to reiterate the comments made by Debbie C of Carleton Place. I was one of the five couples who visited the east and stayed at the Spanish Bay Inn. The rooms were clean and very welcoming beautifully decorated. We had a great view of the ocean and the location was perfect for walking distance to most restaurants and shops. Linda your friendliness and outgoing personality added to the warmth of the Spanish Inn, you were awesome. When visiting Sydney again I will definitly be staying there.
Thank you so much for the welcoming atmosphere.

From the moment we arrrived we experienced the warmth & friendliness Easterners are renowned for at the Spanish Bay Inn. Linda, you were wonderful! I appreciated your help with travel tips and places to go. We were a group of five couples (all 50+) motorcycling Cape Breton. We spent two days at the Inn and all 10 of us were very pleased with the staff, accomodations and amenities. There was a feeling of hominess and atmosphere not realized in your run of the mill generic hotels. The lobby was a great place to meet & share stories & laughs. It featured photos of the former hotel in its early 20th.century day. Ascending the stairs all the suite doors were open welcoming us. All the Wives were charmed by the rooms decor such as 4 poster and sleigh beds, hardwood floors and tasteful lithos. They were clean & comfortable as any one could hope for after a long ride. We have stayed in all classes of hotels including 5 star Deltas and The Royal York in Toronto. Other than paying $9.00 for a beer from the mini bar at the Royal York I would say our stay at the Spanish Bay Inn was every bit an equal enjoyable experience. If one wants a full service breakfast you need to look elsewhere. We all found the continental breakfast of fruit, yogurt, breads & cereals more than sufficient. Having to make ones own coffee (which was no more than pouring the pre filled beaker through the machine & flicking the switch) was like being the first one awake at a friends home were they had prepared everthing for my early morning convenience. In reference to Jane H's comment about the parking. My Harley had a very comfortable night as well. A hardy thanks To Linda and staff. When in Sydney again, we will be back.
Allan & Debbie.
