“In the Classic Manner”

I have been privilaged to stay at the "Pines" for more than 25 years now, so I have seen some changes! All for the better I might add, with the exception of the loss of dress code in the dining room and the lack of the
piano playing during dinner, minor but missed.

For those who are unfamiliar with the "Pines" and it's old world charm, I would suggest that you forget what you are used to, i.e. large rooms and
tons of ammenities, and you will truly NOT be disappointed.

The rooms are well decorated and quite comfortable with everything you will need for a pleasant stay. If golf is your game the course is grand! The new spa is superb and the pool enclosed and most relaxing. But above all that I enjoy at the "Pines" is the dining room with it's wonderful view and 4 star restaurant headed by award winning Chef Aucoin. Mere words do not have the capability to explain the wonderful dishes that come from his kitchen, helped by a wonderful and knowledgeable staff, you could not ask
for a better dining expirence anywhere on Earth.

Took the ferry from from Bar Harbor and drove one hour to Digby. Was at the hotel at 9:30 p.m. no food. Fortunately we were able to get into the Funday Restraurant in town. Great scallops, great service. At breakfast seated at a table with no silverware. Had to get our own coffee. Short of help. Hair in the sausage. One of our party was told no hats at breakfast but other parties wearing hats. This is not posted anywhere.

Tried to arrange an appointment with the spa. Closed for grand opening, never was told this. In the evening we ordered appetizers and when we stated that we would order our entree after finishing our appetizers and drinks, we were told the chef wanted all orders to be given at one time. Evidently they have never eaten at a New York Restaurant. We refused and the waitress had a bad attitude the rest of the meal,.

There is nothing to do. Town is small and very few other eating facilities. Go to Saint Andrews by the Sea, stay at the Algonquin. There is much more to do, grea service and excellent meals.

My wife and I and our 4 children just returned from Nova Scotia. During our travels, we stayed at the Pines Resort for 3 nights. We chose the cottages simply because the main hotel could not accomodate our family size. This Resort is priced at a premium compared to other Resorts or Cottages, however we felt it was worth it. I did not walk away feeling I paid too much.
They have 2 and 3 bedroom cottages and we chose a two bedroom. The cottage consisted of two hotel style rooms, each with bath, that open into a common sitting area. I suspect that you need to be careful if you are requesting a cottage room and are sharing the common area with strangers, but in our case we used both rooms. Cleanliness is important to us and we found the cottage to be clean with fresh linens and comfortable beds. We were provided with full housekeeping services each day. The common room had a fireplace and they had the wood and paper all set with matches sitting on the mantle, with extra wood out on a porch that overlooked the water. Included in our rate was a breakfast buffet that was well stocked with nice hot entrees,as well as fruit, cereals, breads and muffins, which we took advantage of (important for a family of 6!) every morning. In the evening, they delivered, each night, 4 large chocolate chip cookies and juice, which the kids loved because this delivery was for THEM, not mom and dad.

We used the outdoor heated pool. It was clean and while they are still building their spa, it did not interfere with the pool area. The grounds are well kept and also includes a small trail in the woods as well as a walkway to the water. In addition, they offered us bikes to use for as long as we wanted providing they were available. (They were and we used them).

It was a good start to a great vacation. We went into Digby and found a little restaurant (I guess they were all little) with some local music playing.

The resort I found was kid friendly. We did not feel that we had to "hush" anyone when in the lobby. (Not that we are loud but parents with kids know what I mean). They had chess, checkers and backgammon in the main hotel which the kids used as well. The staff was friendly and provided us with advice for places to eat and things to see.

Overall it was a great stay. The only reason why I give it a 4 and not a 5 was I did find that the common room was tight, even with only 4 of us in there at one time, compared to the other cottages that we stayed in throughout the trip. Other than that, the views, the service, the resort itself is a great way to start your tour of beautiful Nova Scotia.

Our group from work decided on the Digby Pines for a weekend summer retreat and are we glad we did! Everything was lovely from the huge heated pool to the excellent meals (I really recommend the chocolate croissants & poached egg with Hollandaise sauce) to the friendly, efficient staff. The beds were comfortable; the atmosphere was quiet at night and we felt everything was done to make our stay more enjoyable. The lady in the Gift Shop was so helpful and very knowledgeble. It was the best hotel I have stayed in for a long time and will be returning with my family. They have package deals that make great Christmas, birthday, anniversary gifts for the people who have everything. And they will soon be opening a Spa. So, Well done, Digby Pines!

Ditto above reviews about size of room and bathroom. Very clean.
Also, the windows actually open! The staff was the best I've ever seen.
The main lobby with its over sized chairs and stone fireplace was gorgeous
The pool was heated and not over clorinated like most hotel pools. Unfortunately the spa wasn't open yet.
The breakfast buffet was divine!
We had a package with the Cat Ferry that was less $$ than through the hotel. The cottages looked really nice, the golf was great.
Bring lots of warm clothes, even in July it was windy and cold at night.
It's open mid May through mid October. There's not much to do in Digby, cute town though.

This hotel was way to expensive for us but we checked in at 1:00 am and they gave us a great deal. It was so beautiful. I can't even describe the grounds it was that wonderful. The only complaint I have is the room was really small. It was so beautifully decorated that it didn't matter about the size. Breakfast was great and we spent the morning just looking around. If you can afford this hotel I would say stay here. If you can't check in late they have great deals.

The Pines Resort sits in a wonderfully tranquil setting just outside Digby overlooking the bay. The grounds are beautifully landscaped and the hotel itself is an impressive building. Inside is even more impressive and the staff could not have been more helpful. Our room wasn't the biggest we'd ever stayed in (but who goes on vacation to sit in the room anyway!) but it was well decorated and had everything we required.
The dining room offers a spectacular view from the hill over the bay, provided the fog doesn't roll in.
The town of Digby is less than 5 minutes drive away. It is a quaint little harbour town full of excellent small shops and restaurants, with whale watching trips leaving from the harbour.
We will certainly stay at the Pines again the next time we are in the area - it was a great discovery.
