“Nice and Easy”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 October 2013

Staying at The Lord Nelson Hotel and looking for a nice dinner we found Estia just a few steps away. The food is Greek based and was fresh an good. Started with a shared calamari salad and then on to veal cutlets with just enough fennel to know it was there. The baby potatoes were unexpected but a nice Canadian touch. The wine list is adequate and moderately priced. Nice!

“great date night! will definitely be back!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 October 2013

My boyfriend and I recently tried this great place for the first time! We were warmly greeted by our server who was also the owner of the restaurant. Let me start by saying you have met the mark! We each ordered an appetizer (Saganaki of course, which was a great show and a homemade Lamb Soup which was exceptional) followed by our mains. I had the moussaka with a side greek salad and my boyfriend had the chicken souvlaki plate. Both were perfection, in both taste and portion. To finish a great dinner, we split an UNBELIEVABLE homemade dessert called Ekmek, probably the best thing either of us have tasted, absolutely delicious. The friendly conversation with Maria made the experience all that much better and we will recommend this to our friends and most certainly be back soon!

“Go for the rack of lamb”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 October 2013

This restaurant is not far from my office and I had eaten lunch here a few times, but only recently had a chance to see what it is like at night. Spring Garden Road is the busiest street in Halifax ( in all of Canada east of Montreal if you believe the hype). Needless to say there are a great many choices, including most of the usual suspects, so it's a very competitive market and lots of places have come and gone in the 30 plus years I have been dining in the area.

Estia is the beneficiary of one of these failures. Deco was a very expensive flop that left behind a gorgeous space in the Art Deco style. The light fixtures which look like upside down versions of a 1920's skyscraper are particularly interesting as are the curves of the very inviting bar which sits in the middle of the restaurant and not at the entrance or to one side like most places. Whether or not the large photographs of the de rigeur Greek villages are necessary is debatable. The bottom line is that Estia has one of the best interiors of any restaurant in Halifax.

The menu contains mostly what you would expect at a more upscale Greek restaurant than most - nothing too unusual or daring. The pikilia platter for four at $34 is a pretty good deal and obviates the need to worry about what to order for an appetizer - it's pretty well all here. However, the reason I am writing this review to recommend Estia is one dish - the rack of lamb. Lamb is something you either love or don't have a taste for. I'm in the former category and seldom pass up a chance to order it, if available.

What makes Estia's rack so special is that rather than cook it as a rack, each of the ribs is precut and cooked on both sides - more like lamb chops. This might sound like heresy and it probably is, but the results are worth it. The outside of each piece looked like it might be overcooked (I ordered medium rare), but when I cut into the meat it was perfectly done. More importantly, because it was prepared the way it was, the meat had the distinct flavours of Greek cuisine permeating throughout. It was a very pleasant surprise and at $26 not a ripoff, which rack of lamb can be in other places.

The wine list was not extensive, but quite reasonable. Service was probably the weak link, but we were seated at a table near the door - people coming in waiting to be seated blocked the view of our table from the service people. Next time I would ask for a table away from the door.

Overall, I have no hesitation recommending Estia - you can make some really bad choices in the Spring Garden Road area so this is a reasonably sure bet.

“Best humus and Greek salad we ever had”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 October 2013

Never been to Halifax before. Spent some money in a local women's store and clerk recommended Estia.
First impression was that it was very clean.
Service was wonderful. Our salad came out with Feta and I do not eat dairy. I forgot to tell server. This did not phase him one iota. Without a word he returned our salad and returned with feta on the side for my wife,'
But the humus was the highlight of the meal. We ordered a refill.

“Food ok, service somewhat wonky”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 September 2013

The art deco style remaining from a former restaurant was more outstanding than the token photos of white washed Greek buildings. The server was friendly but not terribly skilled. The food was alright, although the calamari (good) was accompanied by a small container of tzatzki sauce (with the container sides curving inward to cut down the sauce quantity even more). A request for more sauce was pleasantly presented but it was only when the bill arrived we found there was a $1.50 or so additional charge.

Unfortunately for the restaurant the area outside their windows serves as the smoking area for people waiting for buses and those who must leave a nearby club to smoke. They have placed shrubbery outside to make it less noticeable.

So, it's an OK restaurant but nothing noteworthy.
