“Fabulous location - our home in Halifax”
Reviewed 30 March 2010

Just got back from a 5 night Halifax trip with my wife and daughter to visit many of the wonderful Maritime universities (StFX, Acadia and DAL). We are loyal Marriott customers, and the Halifax Marriott Harbourfront was the perfect location for our stay on the waterfront. We love Halifax - it's a very friendly city, and we love the fresh seafood (Five Fisherman, Salty's and Murphy's) and the numerous pubs (and local brews). We had a nice room with a water view, rollaway cot for my teenage daughter and comfy king size bed. We were regulars at the lobby Starbucks which had complimentary internet, as well as the business center and lounge. The self-parking is a bit pricey at $20/day, but it was close by. The staff was frendly and helpful as always. We skipped the casino next door and the hotel pub, but many of the other guests were certainly enjoying them. We'll be back again next time we're in Halifax later this year.

This hotel is steps from happening pubs, restaurants and yummy Cows ice cream. What more can we ask for?

I booked the romance package for my husband and I, thinking we'd have a relaxing weekend at a classy hotel for Valentine's. This hotel has positives and negatives.

I'll start with the positives. This hotel is immaculately clean! Nothing about this hotel showed evidence of previous guests. Even the pool and whirlpool area seemed spotless. Also, the fitness room is one of the best I've seen in any hotel. The equipment all worked, each piece of cardio equipment is equipped with its own mini TV with packaged earbuds available for no cost. The room even boasts a bowl of fresh fruit for users. Another positive for us was although we faced the highway, not once were we bothered by any sounds of traffic. Another positive is the location. This hotel is connected through a series of pedways to the Casino and to the shops across the street. Plus, there's a Starbucks in the hotel lobby which made it bizarre that they didn't serve Starbucks coffee in the rooms. One more thing, our room boasted a user-friendly thermostat and quiet heating system which is better than any I've seen in any other hotel I've stayed in. Impressive, actually.

Now for the negatives. We had to check and double check all the features of our "Romance" package, since staff consistently confused it with the "Valentine's package." We checked in the first night and were supposed to be greeted with champagne and strawberries. We waited 1.5 hours beyond the time they were supposed to be delivered even after 2 calls to the front desk who seemed unable to tell us the reason for the delay. We had plans to go out, so we left and the treats were delivered sometime over the next few hours during our absence. I also checked with the service staff to confirm the details of our breakfast the next morning which was included in our package. We were told we could go to the restaurant on site at our leisure and it would be covered. The next morning I double checked that with the new staff, who advised no, not breakfast, it's dinner that's included in our package and we missed it the night before. After checking, the staff person agreed that we were correct, it was breakfast that was included but it was supposed to be delivered to our room and not at the restaurant. We negotiated, and he agreed to "allow" us to get breakfast at the restaurant but it was limited to $30. AT this hotel, $30 is not enough for 2 breakfasts and 2 cups of coffee folks. Our bill was over $40 and we're not big eaters! So we had to pay the additional amount. We had to make a further phone call to get our champagne and strawberries the second night and then waited another couple hours for the delivery. We placed the card outside our door that night to order our breakfast in bed for the next morning, watched the delivery staff person take the card, but we never saw our breakfast the next day. We waited an hour and a half after the preferred delivery time but to no avail. So, if you count it up, we spent 5 hours of our weekend of inconvenient waiting for deliveries to our room. The package also advertised a jacuzzi tub but our room didn't have one - the clerk told us that it's not guaranteed to be part of the package, since their jacuzzi rooms are limited. Another surprise...to access internet in your room, there's a $15.95 charge per day! Internet access through the lobby's business center is free, but their flashplayer software was outdated and so you can't view everything you want. Now for the really fun part, the alarm went off after 10 PM our second night and was so loud and piercing that even with a pillow over your head, you couldn't hear yourself think. Several announcements assured us that there was no cause for alarm. The matter was investigated and the alarm finally shut off about 30 minutes later. Also, every conversation in the hallway was easily heard which made for light sleeping.

Bottom line, if you're looking for a value added hotel, this is not the hotel for you. There's no freebies thrown in and everything comes with a cost (with the exception of the free fruit in the fitness center which is handy when they fail to deliver your breakfast). Luckily, we negotiated a new price before we checked out but I would not recommend this hotel unless cleanliness is your only need.

We booked through priceline ($70 USD) which is quite reasonable for Halifax. We were slightly put out by the expensive parking and expensive internet.

However, the main reason for writing this review was the fact that we could not sleep due to the party going on in the room next door. The walls are paper thin and the hotel staff is not concerned at all with the fact that this hotel is getting the reputation of a party hotel.

As another poster stated below, staff told us they couldn't do anything until 11, and we were appalled that a phone call couldn't be made to at least ask them to quiet down. Finally, three phone calls later at 11:40 pm, I had a heated conversation with the front desk staff. They finally sent security up and the noise died down (only to pick up again later on).

I will never stay at this hotel again and I would suggest if you are staying in Halifax to go to either the Westin or the Prince George (both 4 star hotels).

we stayed here for $54 u.s. a night through priceline. it was a very nice hotel, good sized pool with hot tub. business center had 3 computers which was nice. room was clean and a decent size. location was fantastic, right next to historic properties and all the harbour has to offer. the price of parking was very high and i didn't like that i had to take an elevator to get to the lobby from the garage, then walk across the lobby and take a second elevator to get to our room. overall, great place to stay.

I purchased my room on my Priceline and even though I couldn't see past the fence in front of my window, the harbour was right outside the doors of the hotel. The hotel is well maintained and the location is unbeatable. The staff were okay, not fantastic but still okay.
