We spent three nights at the Prince George Hotel at the start of our Nova Scotia vacation. The property skews upscale with a business-vibe; the decor is slightly dated but not offensive. The rooms are reminiscent of a 1990s Westin (cookie cutter but with comfortable beds, roomy closets, renovated shower stall bathroom). On the sixth floor where we stayed there was a small lounge with drinks and a coffee bar, and the handsome mahogany paneling on the hallway entrance was an indication of what the hotel could become if it invests in a full design upgrade.
The service was hit and miss. We sent a note in advance to ask a few questions about Nova Scotia attractions, and received a comprehensive and very helpful response from a concierge named Vincent Trioreau a few days later with some great suggestions. (Incidentally he also told us that the most famous restaurant in Halifax, The Five Fisherman, had lost its luster. We went there anyway, and it was dreadful.)
We had reserved an Executive Suite and when we arrived there was some scuffling behind the front desk. After a few minutes the desk clerk told us that the A/C was broken in our suite and that we would be put into a different (smaller) room. (They also gave us a price break, unsolicited.) They also told us that the A/C would be fixed in the morning and that we could change rooms then. The next morning, the maid came to our door and told us that the people had checked out of our original suite, and that it would be ready for us shortly. We asked -- "there were people there last night? The A/C wasn't broken?" and she replied -- "That's right. Did the front desk get confused about that?" So that was an unfortunate experience.
One other point about this hotel: Our meal at Gio was great. Best meal we had in all of Nova Scotia.
