We were shocked 1 week before our trip to Halifax to find out that thr Haliburton had actually overbooked the hotel and we could not be accomodated. The owner Rob Pretty reserved a room for us in another very good hotel which probably cost him a fortune. As an apology he offered us a dinner for 2 at Stories. We accepted since he was truly sorry for the mix up. Well low and behold they were finally able to accomodate us after all and when we arrived to check in, offered us the dinner for 2 anyway.
The hotel is very well run and very quaint. Our 20th anniversary was lovely. We tried to go to Stories a second night but they were completly full. It is a spectacular restaurant and equal to any 5 star meal we have ever had.
If I had one complaint about the Haliburton it would be it's location. It is a good 15 to 20 min walk to all the restaurants and good shops. It is in what I would call a transitional area mostly populated with students from the university. I was hoping it would be a little closer to everything. We did allot of walking as parking in Halifax is not the best. Ienjoyed it but would not recommend it to any seniors or those who are not too mobile.

If you didn't know beforehand that this is a family-run affair you would soon recognise it as such. It has an intimate feel about it which is helped by the fact that the hotel is a collection of three adjacent 'historic buildings' with a delightful courtyard at the rear. There is a lovely library where tea, coffee, newspapers and a computer with a printer are available all day.
The bedrooms are spacious with extremely comfortable beds. The three rooms we slept in all faced the courtyard and consequently were peaceful.
Breakfasts were very good with a wide selection of fruit, breads, muffins, yoghurts, cereals, boiled eggs, hams and preserves.
The two evening meals we had in the restaurant were delicious and beautifully presented.
As the Halliburton is situated in downtown Halifax we were able to walk to all the 'sights' such as the waterfront, the Citadel,Point Pleasant Park as well as bars, shops and restaurants.Although parking was not a problem as there is a car park in the grounds.
For us the defining characteristic of this hotel was the staff. Doubtless the owners have handpicked their staff carefully. Nothing was too much trouble. On our return to the Halliburton from our Candian tour it felt like coming home! You won't find this level of care in a larger establishment .

Over the last six months, I've stayed at the Haliburton House 3 times. Each visit was a different experience. The first time I was in a large Queen room facing the street in the main builidng. This was nice, well furnished and roomy. Despite being in the winter and cold outside, the room was warm and comfortable. Road noise wasn't very noticeable.
The second visit, in the spring, I had a smaller, more spartan, queen room in one of the adjacent buildings. This meant one had to walk outisde along the street to get to the main building for breakfast. Not so convenient, especially if it's raining.
For my last visit I had a tiny "standard" room which was just barely wide enough to fit the small single bed. The central air con was insufficient to cool the room, and opening the window that faced onto a brick wall didn't help as the air con machinery outside was quite noisy. I settled for running a fan provided in the room, which did keep it fairly comfortable. The bathroom was so small, I had to open the door so I could have enough room to use the towel after my shower! If I were to book here again, I'd only do so if I could confirm I'd get a queen room in the main building.
The staff are very friendly and professional. The included breakfast is served in front room of the main building and consists of typical conitinental fare (cereal, boiled eggs, toast, meat and cheese). There is wireless internet access and a free communal computer in the lobby.
The location is good, being at the end of the downtown strip, the hotel avoids the noisy central area. It's safe to walk around at night, and it's within easy walking distance of most Halifax attractions and restaurants. It's good value for the money and certainly nicer than some of the standard larger chain hotels in town.
I would stay here again, I'd just make sure to book a queen room in the main building.

My husband and I booked two rooms at the Halliburton, one for us and one for my very senior parents. Upon arrival we learned that my parents were placed several floors from us, a concern due to their age and health. Well - the staff at the hotel were amazing. Though the hotel was fully booked, they jumped through hoops for us, coming up with a perfect arrangement, moving our luggage twice to available rooms, all with discretion and a very helpful attitude. What a delight, and in fact a surprise these days!

Our rooms were nice - attractive, clean, and the breakfasts were hearty, but the thing that will bring us back to the Halliburton is it's kind and extraordinary service.

We stayed for 4 nights in July during a month long trip of Quebec and Nova Scotia. We were very warmly and efficiently welcomed at the start and offered help with our luggage to our room which was in first annexe. We felt the room was an adequate size, well air conditioned with eveything we needed. We had a small balcony looking over the garden and with our room to the back got no outside noise. There was a fair bit of noise from other guests going up and down stairs but it did not really bother us.I would agree from other reviews that breakfast was a little uninspiring but adequate and we always were able to get a table. The use of internet in the library proved very useful for us.We ate dinner at the restaurant once( receiving small discount as a hotel guest) which was extremely good and professionaly served. We found the location to be very suitable for walking around Halifax- it is a very easy city to walk around.
We found a laundrette only about 10 mins walk away ( down past the rail station ) to catch up with our laundry wthout paying hotel laundry costs. We enjoyed good pub food in Henry's just round the corner and we would definitely recommend a meal at McKelvie's( about a 15min walk )
Overall I would say our stay at the Hallibrton was very enjoyable and made a good base for exploring Halifax.

My husband and I were so impressed with The Halliburton. It is located right downtown Halifax in a great location for shopping, visiting the Citadel, Pier 21, and many other great things in Halifax.
Our room was in the Pryor-Binney building and it was just perfect. We had a balcony overlooking the lovely garden/seating area that was just so relaxing. The room was clean, spacious, and the bed was incredibly comfortable. The front desk staff were very helpful and provided us with some great information for things to see and places to visit. We were very impressed with the friendly, courteous service.

The Halliburton

A jewel of civility on a quiet street in downtown Halifax.

The words superb staff are often overworked in the world of travel and tourism. The staff at The Halliburton take a charming, multi-building inn to a level of accommodation excellence not found that often in the new millennium. In a city of courteous and friendly people, the staff of The Halliburton stand out as bright lights in providing top-notch service, assistance and information.

Rooms are most pleasant with latest needs, including flat screen television set.

The well-regarded restaurant serves fine fare, including some unique items we had not come across before. A classic example would be the warm lamb salad.

The inn is spotless and offers a restful green-lawned "back yard" to peruse a daily newspaper and morning coffee or to take a pre-dinner drink.

The breakfast is well thought out with the added touch of the finest of bagels offering - Montreal bagels. That is an extra-mile touch.

We will return. The Halliburton is an integral part of Halifax, a city of charm and warmth that reaches into the daily workings of this fine inn.
