“Delightful base from which to explore Halifax.”
Reviewed 4 August 2014

The Halliburton consists of three separate town houses, all historic "heritage" properties. It is a short walk from downtown Halifax and the bustling waterfront district, with its boardwalk and eateries.

We stayed on two separate occasions. Both our rooms were tastefully decorated with period furniture and furnishings, although the first was a little small.

The Halliburton is host to "Stories" restaurant, reputedly the best in Halifax. The food was certainly of fine dining quality, but reasonably priced.

The staff were friendly and helpful, those at reception allowing us to wile away several hours in their small library long after check out as we awaited our trip to the airport for our flight home.

There are no lifts, so access to our top floor bedrooms was arduous with heavy bags, but a bell boy service is sometimes available.

Our only (slight) gripe was with the continental breakfast offering. For a hotel with a top restaurant under its roof, we thought the range limited. Maybe freshly prepared omelettes or pancakes might have enhanced it?

This didn't detract from a thoroughly enjoyable stay though.

We spent one night at the Halliburton arriving around 8pm. There are many very good restaurants within a block or two walk. After dinner we went to our room (the front desk delivered our bags). It was in an adjacent building and was charming. We were so pleased. It even had an alcove which offered additional space. Breakfast was good. Then could walk to the waterfront and all it offered before departing.

Room Tip: We were on the top floor (of a walk up) in the third building and loved the room.

The website promises a lot more than what was delivered. On arrival we found our room to be in another building so it meant a dash down the street if we needed anything from reception or to get to breakfast. The room itself was OK although a little worn and tired. The desk had a large crack in the top and the windows seemed as if the putty was holding them together. We opened the windows at one point as room was stifling only for them to come crashing down 5 mins later with wood dust flying everywhere (it was then we noticed the block on the floor presumably to hold the window open!). The bathroom was extremely small with no countertop to put anything on, only a minute set of hobbit sized shelves. The main problem was the noise...the walls and door seemed so thin we could hear every footstep outside the room and every door being opened and slammed closed. On a good note the breakfast was superb and the location excellent.

Room Tip: Try to ask for one in the main building and a quite room at that!

I like "boutique" hotels, but I admit to some disappointment with the Halliburton. I must have rushed through various online reviews, so let me clarify for others.

This is NOT an updated or modernly decorated boutique hotel. It's an older hotel, with old decor that feels a bit run down to me. The bathroom sink has no vanity around it, though an open front cabinet provides some shelves for your toiletries. The shower in our room has a bit of a musty smell to it. No curtains, just blinds, and the room is over a noisy street. Parking a few blocks away is tricky if you're driving anything larger than a mini-Cooper.

Oddly placed steps here and there guarantee you'll trip at least once going into or out of your room, and up and downstairs. A small fridge and bar area in the room allow you to make coffee, though there are no heat or AC controls in the room for temperature settings. A tiny TV (16"?) gives you the news.

I didn't find the room decor to be particularly charming, but simply old - sort of like you're staying in your old great aunt's spare bedroom. Not saying it's bad, just not at all deluxe, and somehow not what I've experienced at other "boutique" priorities. I guess you can use that name any way you like. I'm going to use it for my small guest room at home ....

Laundry service was prompt, with prices ranging from $4.55 for underclothes to $11.50 for shorts. Breakfast comes with the room, and was a basic one - some bagels and toast, soft cooked eggs, fruit salad, a few cereals. Enough to get you going. If you've forgotten anything, an Atlantic Superstore is a 5 minute walk away.

Staff is friendly and helpful. Rooms are small (we're in a queen), so head to the library if you get claustrophobic. You can also print boarding passes there.

Location is good for harbor or historic Barrington St sites, and you can walk to North End hot spots in about 15 minutes. Bearly's around the corner has good burgers.

Room Tip: Not sure - ask in advance about a quiet room (maybe over the courtyard), and watch out if you strugg...

The property is apparently designated "historic" and as such can't have an elevator. We were in an attic room and I do have trouble with stairs. The desk clerk was surprised that I hadn't noticed the "disabled" designation on their website; I am not disabled, don't use a wheelchair, walker, cane, etc., but I find several flights of stairs a bit much -- never occurred to me that there wouldn't be an elevator. The room itself was in the attic with dormers (husband hit his head more than once) and the furnishings were, well, shabby. Not antiques, but tables with water rings and such. But it was clean. The staff at breakfast (Lindsey) was charming and helpful and gave us great hints on what not to miss in town and in Lunenburg. The hotel had a nice garden, was convenient to both the waterfront and good restaurants. Be warned however that their restaurant, Stories, is not open on Sunday and Monday and we had wanted to try it. Think for what we had it was overpriced.

Room Tip: Make sure you can do stairs! Don't do the dormer rooms.

Loved this boutique hotel. I read great reviews and the hotel lived up to all of them. Very friendly staff, great location, beautiful building and rooms, super clean and comfortable. No elevator but not a big deal and staff offered many times to help carry luggage if we needed. Parking is included which is a bonus. Also perfect location for restaurants and sightseeing. Can't say enough great things about this hotel.

Very disappointed with the Halliburton. Our double room was tiny, you would expect if you have a double room to be able to get in both sides of the bed... Sadly not! The bed was pushed up against the wall, with no bedside table or light on one side. The bathroom was clean, but had no plug in the sink. They were obviously doing some decorating at some time, whilst there was no evidence of decorators, they had left masking tape up the stairs and all the chippings from the paint they had chipped off the wall up the stairs for our whole 3 night stay. Well, I say 3 nights, but we were so disappointed with the room, we made a snap decision and decided to explore a bit more of Nova Scotia, and booked a guest house in another town for the middle night.
Anyway, we complained to the manager, and was told the hotel was fully booked (despite availability showing on their website!) and there was nothing we could do - apparently our agent had booked a "petit double".
On the plus side it was a good location, and had free parking.
My advice to anyone booking this hotel.... be careful what room type you book! And don't expect too much boutique...

I am pleased these guests enjoyed our great location downtown. Our Double rooms are certainly not as spacious as our Queen rooms. We clearly describe them as "Petite" on all channels and our web site. They are a great value however and many guests find them quaint and cozy. I regret that a travel agent reserved one for this guest without communicating these details. Our renovations and repairs are complete and guests are really appreciating the fresh look.
