“delightfuly charming inn!”
Reviewed 1 June 2011

we booked a two night romance package that was available at the time, and it was well worth the value. we had the room that included a two person jacuzzi. this inn is delightfully decorated and appointed - absolutely charming. the breakfast was great and had everything we could possibly want. There are rumours that the inn is haunted, and I have even seen a television show based on this, but we experienced no such phenomenon. I found it particularly fascinating that Oscar Wilde had stayed in this inn, as he is a favourite author. This inn is loaded with character, atmosphere and charm.

We recently spent 5 nights here and it was delightful. The location is perfect for walking around the city and exploring. We loved the charm and the clean comfortable rooms. Especially loved the coffee and biscuits in the afternoon. The staff is friendly and helpful. It was lovely to come "home" to after a day of sight seeing, or an evening of beer and music. well done, Waverley!

In Halifax for a medical consultation, cost was a consideration and I was looking for reasonable accommodations downtown. (Some will tell you it can't be done - reasonably-priced hotels now seem to all be in Dartmouth or the Bedford area, with downtown hotels averaging $130 and up a night. Plus valet or paid parking.)

I had stayed at the beautiful Victorian-era Waverley Inn before, and was intrigued to find their website offered a "Traditional Room" for just $103 a night. Some of the reasons for this price were outlined on the website; I called to get more details, and, fully informed, made the booking.

I'll review the room by its issues/limitations and the hotel by its positives.

Issues: The room I had - for just $98! with my CAA discount - is on an upper-floor with only stair access. I walked up one large and two small flights of stairs to my room. Not a problem for me. The room itself was very small, with a bed and a desk and chair (all antique furniture). That was adequate for my needs. There was a 3-piece modern ensuite bath - toilet, sink and shower, all gleaming and perfectly clean. Because of the lack of space in the room, the TV was on a shelf in a closet! And I could not get closed-captioning to work. But the tv otherwise worked fine and could be watched from the bed. The Inn's larger rooms are more impressive, with correspondingly higher fees. But for a solo traveler staying one night it was fine - and I could have stayed a week comfortably.

Positives: $98 for a hotel on Barrington Street in Halifax? With free, on-site parking??? That's unheard of. The Waverley Inn itself is beautiful and charming and a delight and the staff is just great. There's wireless (unsecured) internet in every room and wired internet in the lobby. There's a complimentary breakfast in the morning and cookies and coffee/tea put out in the evening. The Inn is surrounded by restaurants and just a couple of blocks from a major grocery store with a pharmacy and a provincial liquor store.

Overall I recommend this Inn highly.

We just got back from our stay here. It was in a great location with friendly staff and excellent service. Loved how they are staying current by having Internet and computers while still showing the older charm. Will be back next month to finish off our package we won. Loved how you gave us options and were flexible to help us enjoy our package. Keep up the great work!

My spouse took me here for a belated Valentines night away.
Such a beautiful place! We had a Deluxe Room with a Queen Bed, fireplace and Jacuzzi tub. It was great.

I am used to staying in more modern, updated hotels, but this was such a nice change. For such an old building, it is very well maintained and clean. A great location away from all the noise, but still close to restaurants and attractions.

Breakfast was great - pancakes, french toast, quiche, cereal, juice, coffee, etc. Nothing too fancy, but better than your regular free contenential breakfast at most places.

Highly recommend!

We stayed at the Waverley for a couple nights and genuinely enjoyed our stay. Our room was just an economy room but it was well decorated, clean, and inviting. The bed was soft and comfortable, and the included breakfast was quite nice. We WILL be going back again!

The Waverly Inn was a great stay and I would definitely stay there again. The room we had was beautifully furnished with antiques, and was very spacious and comfortable.

The hotel itself is stunning with a lot of the original features still intact. The room was quiet and clean, and also had a small bar fridge which was a bonus.

Breakfasts are served in the basement but you hardly know you are in the basement as it is furnished just as lavishly as the rest of the hotel.

If you appreciate old charm and don't want to stay at a McHotel, this is a great choice.
