“A Little Piece of History”
Reviewed 28 July 2013

Fell in love with the Waverley when checking for hotels online and so pleased we made the right choice and stayed there. We really wanted to stay somewhere different as opposed to the usual modern chain hotels I have stayed at in Canada. The Waverley is a beautiful building with a well kept exterior with a small colourful garden infront while inside it is a treasure trove of Victorian decor and style. It is a shame that the surrounding buildings are all modern and unattractive.

Location wise Barrington Street is a bit of a mixture with parts of it a bit run down and derelict looking though where the hotel is okay but nothing special. About a 10 minute walk to the main harbour area and the shopping district, there are also buses going straight past the Waverely into town. We stayed in rooms 127 & 128 smallish rooms but not cramped, comfortable though creaky old beds. Furniture reflected the historical charm of the hotel with an old fashioned writing desk etc, wardrobe space limited however and both rooms were a bit dark with only having one small window. Bathroom modern, clean and small but a good shower.

Reception staff were on the whole very polite and helpful though one guy when I asked a question was less than enthusiastic to answer. There are no lifts in the Waverley so to reach our rooms it was up one long flight of stairs then a further 2 short flight of stairs. Very pleased we were given help carrying up our heavy bags on arrival. Oh cleaning staff were also very polite and spoke every time you passed.

Really liked the free coffee/tea by reception and then cake in the evenings and it was nice to sit in the beautiful parlour to read the papers or go online. My only disappointment with the Waverley was the breakfast finding it quite basic and limited on choice.

This hotel is awesome. The staff, the building, the beds, the location, all of it is great! The building is old enough that there are essentially no level surfaces in the building, you may feel a little inebriated as you walk down the halls but rest easy, it is just the random bumps and slopes in the 200 year old floor. Our room came with a large canopied bed that was beyond comfortable. The only qualm I had was with the AC, its either flaming hot in your room or downright chilly. Given that is an old, old building the temperature kind of comes with the territory.

The Waverley Inn, Halifax has a great downtown location, vert near the boardwalk where there are lots of restaurants. The inn has wonderful character, with original antique furniture. There is also parking on site which makes it very easy to explore all the sights on foot. The breakfast was a little haphazard on the two mornings we were there, but great places to eat nearby, so worth staying if breakfast is not the main concern. Very comfortable bedroom and wifi available. Coffee and tea in foyer is also to be recommended. Overall, an enjoyable stay.

Room Tip: We were in room 202 on the down floor, which was classed as a superior room.

The Waverley Inn in downtown Halifax is a charming, historic B&B style hotel, much to be preferred to the typical large chain hotels for the visiting tourist. The 1866 Victorian mansion has been a hotel since 1876, and has been renovated and modernized, although with no elevator there are a lot of stairs to negotiate. The breakfast room in the basement is particularly inconvenient. The lobby and halls are full of beautiful antiques, as are the rooms. The only serious drawback for us was the diminutive room, and especially the bathroom, which was so small you could hardly turn around. Like most historic renovations, there was no counter space in the bathroom, with the pedestal sink. The furniture of our “traditional” room was nice, with excellent bedding, but there was only one chair and the windows were small. I guess you have to work with the building you have, but it would probably be worth the extra cost to book one of the larger rooms. The location is perfect, and it is an easy walk to the Citadel and the harbour waterfront. There is free parking and Internet, with two computers in the lobby. We lucked out in getting tickets (half price, even!) to the world-famous Halifax International Tattoo, which was phenomenal, even better, in my opinion, than the Tattoo in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The Waverley Inn is in the perfect location for a trip to Halifax. It was within walking distance to everything we wanted to do and we felt save walking the area after dark. The Inn was charming and offered private parking off the street. The staff was very nice and our room was clean and cool. After a hot day walking in Halifax, it was nice to return to a room with a clean shower and air conditioning. Our room was on the third floor and there was no elevator; but, it was worth the climb. I highly recommend the Waverley Inn!

Room Tip: Find out the history of the Inn prior to making your reservations. There are several rooms with inte...

If you love the charm of a quaint B&B, The Waverly is for you. It was more than comfortable and clean and the staff could not have been more hospitable. They recommended great places for dinner and were attentive to our needs.
The location is very near the waterfront and the parking is free, secure behind the building and abundant.
I would stay here again and would request a ground floor room since the mansion has no elevator. Overall, a great experience.

Room Tip: Ask for a ground floor room if you have trouble negotiating stairs with heavy luggage.

Beautifully restored and kept Victorian mansion. Rooms are all different with their own charm. Rooms are very well appointed. Good location in Halifax and you can walk to almost all the sites and very close to the waterfront and Via station. It is an old property and has many stairs, if mobility an issue ask for a room on a lower floor (no elevator) We had the Oriental room which was just fantastic, one of the most interesting and beautiful rooms we have stayed in on all of our travels around the world. We will stay here again on our next trip to Halifax.

Room Tip: All rooms are different and have their own charm. Our room was incredible "The Oriental Room&qu...
