During our visit to the museum, two very different artists were on display. The presentation on Maud Lewis and her work was informative, engaging, and helped to bring a sense of who she was to life -- what a charming story! Marion Wagschal's trained style is a striking contrast, but also hauntingly beautiful. The museum has a very nice permanent collection as well and the staff were extremely friendly -- we spoke to a lovely woman at the front desk, a docent in one of the halls, and a member of security who had spent some time in a city near our home. Excellent experience in Halifax.

Can't say I warmed to this one although the Maud Lewis exhibition was certainly comprehensive. I suppose this is a relatively recent gallery and not as well-endowed as other cities. Perhaps it was the jet lag, but I found it confusingly arranged and claustrophobic. Sorry Halifax this was not the highlight of my visit to your fine city.

The Maud Lewis exhibit in the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia is a must see for anyone visiting this lovely city. Her uninhibited, free-spirited, almost child-like paintings are a delight of colour for the eyes. Her charmingly painted house, fully reconstructed to replicate it's original state, is fascinating. Imagine living in such a tiny space. I also enjoyed an exhibit of Folk Art and strange, huge biographical works by Marion Wagschal. I defy anyone not to be moved by her paintings. The AGNS a small gallery and can be easily navigated in one trip but give yourself time so you can see the historical work - a nice selection.

I went on a Thursday night where they had free admission due to some Youth recognition program. There was entertainment that night and it was quite busy. The exhibitions were fantastic, loved the local artist Graeme Patterson - could have stayed in that one forever. Nice to see Indigenous art in varying forms there - diverse for a smaller gallery.

I love small galleries like this one. The Maud Adams exhibit and story was well done and there was a special exhibit of two artists--I especially liked Marion Wagschal, who is there through Sept. 7, 2014. Many times these smaller museums allow one to focus more.
