I used to love the comfortable corners and velvety booths of the old Victory Arms in the Lord Nelson. The more open floor plan from the recent renovation does make the newly christened "Arms" look a bit brighter and more up-scale.
But I fear that too much has changed. Not only is the decor different, but the menu has changed substantially. Old favourites such as shepherd's pie are gone to be replaced with pricier, more sauce- and condiment-laden options. During a three-day stay, I had a very good burger (but the excellent meat was overwhelmed by a spicy sauce); lamb with apricot stuffing ( good, but fatty); and a petite beef pie ( my favourite). I think that the restaurant will appeal to new diners, but those who remember the old menu will be more than nostalgic for their favourites.
Thanks to good service from Missy on all three nights, my rating moves from 3 to 4.
