“First time back since the renovation”
Reviewed 12 June 2014

I used to love the comfortable corners and velvety booths of the old Victory Arms in the Lord Nelson. The more open floor plan from the recent renovation does make the newly christened "Arms" look a bit brighter and more up-scale.

But I fear that too much has changed. Not only is the decor different, but the menu has changed substantially. Old favourites such as shepherd's pie are gone to be replaced with pricier, more sauce- and condiment-laden options. During a three-day stay, I had a very good burger (but the excellent meat was overwhelmed by a spicy sauce); lamb with apricot stuffing ( good, but fatty); and a petite beef pie ( my favourite). I think that the restaurant will appeal to new diners, but those who remember the old menu will be more than nostalgic for their favourites.

Thanks to good service from Missy on all three nights, my rating moves from 3 to 4.

“Cosy pub with lobster rolls to die for !”
Reviewed 29 May 2014

A cross between a true pub atmosphere and cosy but bright restaurant, we enjoyed one of the most generous and delicious lobster rolls ever here. I was quite taken aback, as I consider myself a pretty knowledgeable lobster roll aficionado, going back to childhood holidays in Maine !
These were so generous that you did not need ( and we did not eat) the bun!
I asked before ordering if the lobster was fresh ( yes.) and it was.
A friend had a very generous burger and that seemed a popular choice in the room. Even the devilled egg appetizer choice was good. Welsh rarebit, not so much, just toast topped with melted cheese.
You would not leave hungry and I think for a hotel restaurant, it offers a lot of menu choices, and good value.

“No longer a comfy pub”
Reviewed 19 April 2014

2nd time here since the grand renovation. No longer a cool place to drop in for a drink and snack before a movie. It's true that it looks more upscale than before and all the little nooks and crannies are gone...but the warmth of the place has also been removed and you cannot envision people even sitting around the bar ever having a good time. On arrival we sat ourselves at our "favourite" booth and were told it was reserved. That's fair enough. We were also told that you must wait to be seated as this is the new policy even though there was no one around to do so at the time. About 7 people in the place. The server recommended for pre-movie munchies a board of goat cheese, roasted garlic, spinach and toast...yumm (I'm kidding). Maybe third time will be the charm but I'm thinking we need a new pre-date hangout.
This place is fine if you are a hotel guest and needing a meal and some food items are indeed good but for a good time...try elsewhere.

“A New Look, new Menu!”
Reviewed 6 March 2014

We always enjoyed the old Victory Arms but you have to try the newly renovated and changed menu of "The Arms". The space is more open and bright with the exposure of big windows. The space has an upscale bistro feel and the menu reflects that. Familiar faces are still there and always such a friendly atmosphere. We are currently enjoying trying the new food items and so far have not been disappointed .Glad a few booths were kept. Scott and Brandon always make our visit feel extra special.

“Love the new decor and menus”
Reviewed 3 March 2014

We had fabulous steaks (dry cured rib eyes from Cut Steakhouse - same owners but here it was a much better quality food and service than we had at Cut a couple of years ago), lovely sides, good wine selection, and desserts to die for. The only complaint we have is that the staff are upon you before you even open your menu to see what you want to order. They all do it, so it must be policy of the restaurant. Offer a drink first, let people peruse the menu, it makes one feel like you are being rushed along. Not really dining music but good music at least.
