“Beautiful drive and views plus some interesting history”

The trip out the site is half the enjoyment. The drive takes you through nice small roads and beautiful views. The views from the site itself are simply grand. Although there is not a lot to see at the site itself, it is still worth the trip and the time. What is there, is fairly interesting. For free, you can't go wrong.

The trip to York Redoubt is well worth it, even without visiting the fort. Take the coast roads all the way, even the gravel ones (always go left). Beside the fort is Stella Maris church, built by Portuguese fisherman. Explore all the walkways in the fort especially those that go through the wall. Built to protect the city from Napoleon, you can see forts on the other side of the harbour on McNabs island, as well as the lighthouse there.

A short drive from the city to the Chebucto headland. Huge gun emplacements from pre and post 20th Century; protected harbour approaches during two centuries of war. Certainly takes one back in time.

Signs pointing the way are very small, hard to see, and hidden by foliage. It is directly off of Ferguson Cove Road and Purcells Cove Road/Herring Cove Road. Bring a flashlight to go down in the bunkers that are left open for your exploration. Open until 8pm beginning in late June.
