Owner description: The Halifax Farmers' Market was created by Royal Proclamation in June of 1750, a year after the founding of Halifax. The Governor and Council designated a site for the Market - the present day Bank of Montreal building. For 50 years this flesh, meat or cattle market, as it was known, sold produce as well as livestock delivered from Acadian farms in the Annapolis Valley and from local farm production. In 1848 the City of Halifax was incorporated and the original City Charter conveyed the Country Market property to the city "for the public and common benefit and use of the City of Halifax according to the true interest and meaning of the original grant." The Market has operated in several locations across the city since its inception in 1750, but moved to the Halifax Seaport in 2010 where it is now known as the Halifax Seaport Farmers' Market - the longest continuously running Market in North America and proudly hosting over 250 vendors! Halifax Seaport The Halifax Seaport is a vibrant arts and cultural district found at the south end of the Halifax waterfront. Extending from Piers 19 to 23, you will find artisans, retailers, cruise terminals, event facilities, cafes, galleries, offices, a museum, a university and the Halifax Seaport Farmers' Market. This district has been redeveloped to showcase local talent and is now a popular destination for locals and visitors alike.

“Real food real people - Autumn harvest bounty”
Reviewed 26 April 2014

So Nova Scotian to walk into the entrance and there is a little boy playing jigs with his fiddle in the corner. I bought the best apple juice I've ever tasted from a friendly orchard owner and real dairy products. By "real" I mean organic, non-homogonized milk (glass bottles) and yoghurt from Nova Scotia dairy farms. So delicious! Not to mention the freshest kale!

This farmer's market was super fun for me, my kids and grandma - something for everyone. We went back the following Saturday to pick up more apple juice and dairy -- this time there was a young 20-something couple singing at the entrance. So nice, if I lived in Halifax I'd definitely be there every Saturday morning for groceries and for the fun of it all.

Tip - on Saturdays go early before the whole city arrives.

“Nobody there”
Reviewed 12 March 2014

There are only a handful of vendors at this market throughout the week and not worth the trip. The venue is also off the beaten track and not aesthetically pleasing. Much prefer the Old Brewery market.

“Amazing!”
Reviewed 24 February 2014

Stopped through the Halifax Seaport Farmer's Market since we were in port on a cruise. It is definitely an experience! Everything you could imagine. It was very busy, obviously, since I believe there were 3 cruise ships in port at the time. But definitely something you don't want to miss! Many, many vendors with a wide variety of items. Definitely not all food, but lots of that as well!

“Food Vendors”
Reviewed 18 January 2014

There were a lot of excellent vendors at the Seaport Farmers Market. The selection of fresh fruit and meat was astounding and adequately priced. I was delighted to see a variety of Nova Scotia wineries and breweries making their way to the market to sell their wares. To my delight, the variety and amount of food vendors was amazing. Our party of four managed to find something to eat for everyone, which is a hard thing to do because we are a fussy bunch.

A note on parking: If you can't find a place to park on the street, there is ample parking next to the Market, but it is expensive. If you have the time, loop around to save some money.

“Good way to spend a Saturday morning”
Reviewed 31 December 2013

The Halifax farmers market is the ideal place to spend your Saturday morning. The food is the best in town. Local farmers bring their best produce and local restaurants are there to prepare you some hot food on the go. The bread and pastries are also amazing. The market also has a large selection of local crafts and goods for sale. It is open year round, so make sure not to forget about it in the winter months.
