“Enjoyed the experience”

We were a group of 6 at this restaurant. I had a seared tuna dish that was terrific. The server was also very professional. I have no complaints -- I enjoyed the dinner very much.

“Average or Very Good ?”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 June 2014

Difficult decision on how to rate La Frasca.
We were there early: 6:00 p.m., it was quiet and very quickly it started to fill up and the noise level increased accordingly.
My conundrum is really with the service. The waiter was friendly but I felt that he was constantly trying to sell us drinks..we don't drink, appetizers which we declined but he asked at least 2 more times and then asked if we would like to try the antipasto plate!! I don't mind and in fact appreciate suggestions but this had the feeling of a hard sell.
The food was good not amazing but very good. Three of us had a good sized portions the other person had rigatoni and we all felt so badly about his portion we gave him parts of ours.
Desert was good but one of the other restaurants in the group; Il Mercato has the best deserts of most other Halifax restaurants.
The waiter at the end of the meal was very talkative and pleasant and yet we still felt we were being sold something such as a good tip.
We paid $130.00 for 4 entrees and 4 desserts, no drinks, no wine, no appetizers.
The next time we are wanting Italian food we will definitely go to Il Mercado.

“Best spot on Spring Garden”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 June 2014

With the demise of Estia, relocation of Onyx and the loss of the principal chef at Fiasco, the Spring Garden Road dining scene in Halifax has contracted in the last year or so. Luckily there are still some good choices, especially La Frasca which is a remake of the extremely popular Il Mercato. It is one of a number of restaurants in HRM owned and operated by the Bertossi family who set the bar very high over 25 years ago with da Maurizio (since sold) and continue to this day. In the 2014 Coast ratings, Halifax's most reliable local newspaper when it comes to restaurants, Bertossi restaurants won the top three spots for Italian - so you know what they are doing with Italian cuisine.

The menu at La Frasca is as expected primarily Italian, with a huge variety of choices. The great thing about eating here is that you will always want to come back. For me it is difficult to decide between double appetizers, pizza, pasta or something more substantial. Once I narrow it down to the type of food then there are still a lot of decisions to be made.

Here are some of the choices that I know from experience are great - for appetizers the calamari, the flash fried asparagus, artichoke and onion or the caesar salad which is up there with the best in town. For pasta the pappardelle with wild boar, tagliatelle or the Italian mac & cheese are all good. Even better is the mushroom risotto. You can't go wrong with any of the pizzas which are authentic Neopolitan thin crust style. For mains I love the lamb chops which are not chops per se, but a rack of lamb pre-sliced and coated in a brilliant pistachio and mint crust. Always perfectly cooked as well. Here's one that might surprise and that's the beef tenderloin which comes pre-sliced and not as just a chunk of meat. Again, always done to perfection. Lastly the buttermilk chicken is one of the most popular choices.

For dessert I'm hooked on the pistachio torta with mascarapone and pistachio brittle - puts peanut butter brittle to shame.

They make great cocktails, after dinner drinks - my wife loves the Caffe Amore and the wine selection is very good. Service is professional and despite the fact the place is usually packed, they don't rush you. Prices are reasonable, but I wouldn't call it inexpensive. Our recent meal with tip was over $200, but here in Nova Scotia we pay a 15% sales tax.

Since this is not a pub or a steak house the clientele leans heavily toward couples of all ages and a lot of tables of young women out for a night on the town.

The only reason I can't give La Frasca the highest rating is that there are too many tables for the space so that it seems you are almost elbow to elbow with strangers. Definitely takes away from the romance aspect as does the very high decibel level. Unless you are really averse to noise La Frasca will satisfy your need for good Italian fare.

La Frasca is one of the best restaurants in Halifax. The food is delicious, you can't go wrong here. The atmosphere is also great and the restaurant is always busy.

“Awesome food but so loud”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 May 2014

We went to La Fresca last Friday. As we arrived the place was filled up to the last table, good thing we had a reservation. We ordered drinks and appetizers to start with and main dishes for after. Everything was brought to our table not too long after ordering even though the place was still packed. Everything tasted fantastic. The linguine pasta I ordered was cooked perfectly to the right consistency.
Unfortunately since it was so busy we could barley have a conversation, and if we talked to each other we had to yell across the table. Besides that our waiter was too inclined to ask us questions about personal life. I do not mind a waiter that is nice and says a thing here and there when its appropriate, but sometimes it‘s just not.
Even though the place has a warm and very nice feeling to it, I would probably choose to go there next time on a not so busy day.
