The Verandah is pretty nice on the inside, with comfortable beds and large rooms. The loft upstairs is particularly nice, and is the only one that is en suite. We were told there were private bathrooms for each of the rooms, but we weren't told they were not connected to the rooms (though it was implied). One of the bathrooms was upstairs, which wasn't a huge problem for us, but could've been for an older couple. So please note that except for the loft, the bathrooms are not connected to the rooms.
The breakfasts were delicious and very filling.
The property is located not too far from the downtown area, close enough for a 15-20 minute walk. The price was better than many places to stay in the center of the city as a result.
Joan, the owner, is overly talkative, to the point of sometimes being difficult to get out of a conversation with. We were told lots of stories about her family, including some we didn't want to know about involving substance abuse or estranged children.
If you're willing to put up with some quirks, then this is a good value place to stay in Halifax. If you want a perfect place to stay, then try a hotel, as this is more like staying at someone's house.
