From beginning to end this place is a standout. The service was great, the specials thoughtful, the plating tempting, and the flavours exquisite. The menu features a local blend of land and sea options. The seasonal veg is a standout and custom blended to match the protein and sauces, speaking of sauces. Wow - lick the plate great. The wine list is limited and a bit pricey, but the options are generally of high quality. Take a risk on a Nova Scotia white if you are enjoying seafood, these wines have improved greatly over the last decade.

We had the pleasure of dining at this restaurant a few nights ago and I must say I was impressed with the quality of service. The waiters always kept an eye on our glasses and made sure to clear the plates just at the right time. When we asked regarding a specific ingredient, he promptly checked upon it with the chef.

Regarding the food, the biscuits were so good, I wanted to bring them home! I loved the mix of textures and flavors in my cod dish, but overall, it was on the saltier side. I heard their tiramisu is to die for, but the crime brûlée was really quite good as well. I would be happy to return to Chives for another meal when I go back to Halifax someday!

We had a very nice meal at Chives. There were four of us and we all enjoyed our first and main courses. The salmon was cooked to perfection. The vegetarian option was both tasty and colourful. The service was impeccable. Everything came at the right time and we never had to look for the 'garçon'. He seemed to always be there at the right moment.
The only disappointment: the desserts. The rhubarb tiramisu was not great. We did not like the combination of bitter chocolate with the rhubarb. We also had the dessert of the day: rhubarb upside-down cake. It was airy and with a nice balance of spices. However, one could not really taste the rhubarb. I would not recommend these two desserts. The Nova Scotia wines were a nice discovery. The recommendations worked well with our dishes.

Great food, great service by Nick, great discussion with the owner a die hard Habs fan. Relaxed atmosphere, very enjoyable. Next time in Halifax, we will go back. Dessert was awesome. Lamb and halibut were perfect.

Chives is an up scale bistro and is located in a charming older building. It focuses its menu on locally obtained ingredients. The menu items are interesting although relatively pricey.

Unfortunately on my visit there the entree I ordered was under cooked pork and the accompanying side was extremely salty. Two other diners in our party ordered the same menu item and had the same experience. We all returned our food and asked for it to be cooked more. Which it was. We were able to eat the meat then but I would not order that meal again and frankly would not be inclined to return. For the price of the menu items one would expect better quality in the meal.

It was also interesting that we were not asked if we wished dessert and a hot beverage at the end of our meal, although desserts were listed on the menu.

I am very sorry you were not happy with your meal and experience on your last visit. I was on site that evening and assure you that the pork dish was indeed cooked correctly. The particular preparation you ordered was a cured and smoked, bacon wrapped tenderloin. The pink that you felt indicated it was underdone, is actually the result of the aforementioned process, and gives the meat a similar look to smoked ham. As for the accompanying cassoulet being to salty for your liking, that is simply an issue of personal preference. The same dish sold very well that evening, without issue.

After cooking the meat further and re-plating the meal with fresh sides, we truly felt that we had done our best for you in the moment. If you were still not satisfied with your meal, you could have, and should have made that clear to your server, who would have offered you something else, or removed the charge from the bill. This is our satisfaction guarantee, of which all service staff are aware.

As for not being offered dessert menus this seems to have been a simple misunderstanding. The person at your table who payed for all of you that night, requested the bill from your server, The server at that time did as requested and presented the bill. The server felt it would have been presumptuous of him, at that point, to offer you dessert menus, once the host had requested and been presented the bill. If that was not the host's intention, then they could have requested dessert menus, and the server would have adjusted the bill.

I am truly sorry that we did not meet your expectations that evening, but sincerely hope that you will give us another try at some point. If you are ever again not satisfied with any part of your experience, please do not hesitate to make that clear in the moment. We are there in your service, and always do our utmost to make your dining experience with us memorable, for all the right reasons, rather than for those mentioned in your review.
