“Disappointing food, brash service”
Reviewed 29 September 2011

Dofskys Grill is linked to, but not owned by the Cambridge Suites Hotel. We were staying overnight, it was pouring with rain and the menu looked reasonable so we decided to stay dry and eat at Dofskys. We regretted it.

Our starters were poor. I had the steamed mussels. The sauce was ok but they were served luke warm. My wife had the Signature dip duo, which was supposed to be Mediterranean artichoke and roasted red pepper, served with corn chips and bread. The dips turned out to be two large pots of thick, unappetising, congealed and chewy cheese, with just a hint of artichoke and pepper. There was no mention of cheese on the menu. After a couple of mouthfuls she gave up on the dips.

The fish and pasta mains were a little better but again were barely warm and the Penne pasta was nicely al dente but strangely quite sticky at the same time.

Worst of all was the service. Our waitress was loud and brash. We weren't expecting five star service but were a little surprised when asking for a Nova Scotian wine recommendation to be told at full volume "I don't drink wine, my drink is rum"! No recommendation was forthcoming. This was then followed by "Do you want me to bring the pepper thing" when our main courses were served (sorry, thrown in front of us!).

We said nothing but were then somewhat surprised to be given the bill without even having been asked whether we wanted dessert or coffee (the second time that had occurred during our trip to Canada).

The hotel offered a complementary continental breakfast the next morning in Dofskys. It was reasonable and the service more subdued but we were surprised to see that they started clearing away the buffet 10 minutes before it was due to close.

We would not return.

“Quiet, varied menu , good service”
Reviewed 8 August 2011

Have been to Dofsky's several times over several years. Their menu is varied, check their website . They always have a good array of pasta dishes, and items like their fish and chips, their haddock dinners are very nice . Their burger platters are also very good. Desserts are good too. The restaurant is generally quiet even when it is busy . You get good value. You'd likely pay more for the same in most other places . At times they will have specials , like 2 for 1 pasta or roast beef nights , and these are very good .Only problem is parking as they rely on street parking , and that in Halifax downtown is always a problem .Never though to ask if they have a "deal" with the hotel where they are located The hotel they are in does have parking , but we never use it . Suggest you reserve and ask for a table at the rear .

“Disappointing, even without dining”
Reviewed 2 July 2011

We are visitors to Halifax and this evening we went to Dorfsky's to dine. We had planned to use an Entertainment book coupon good on an entree up to a fixed amount when purchasing a second meal. Well, that was our plan and I expected it would be as uneventful as it had been there in years' past.

The only meal available was a buffet at 5:30 p.m. The coupon we were told by restaurant staff would not be honoured. That was o.k. as we intended to order from the menu. That idea was quashed as restaurant staff told us that ordering from the menu would be available 7:30 p.m. and later and if we would like to come back then .......

Needless to say, we had no intention to wait 2 hours to return to a restaurant that was virtually empty. We ate elsewhere and made our 7:30 commitments.

“You get what you pay for...”

Our hotel offered a free continental breakfast at Dofsky’s Grill. The breakfast was nothing special – just your run of the mill cereals, fruit, muffins, bread. Your hot options were oatmeal and hard-boiled eggs. We tried a little of everything. The muffins were good – fresh out of the oven. The fruit was very disappointing – definitely not fresh – that was enough to keep us away from the free breakfast! We tried ordering off the menu next. My husband tried a burger which was ok, and I tried the omelet with was also ok. After that, we looked for other breakfast options in the area…

“Eat at Dofskys”
Reviewed 25 March 2009

I have been reminded after another dinner at Dofsky's how good this little hotel restaurant is. They serve some of the best seafood chowder in town, and their menu is diverse and reasonably priced. Although it is a sophisticated restaurant, its link to the hotel makes it fare game for eating with kids and a nice option for parents who are tired of traditional kid-friendly restaurant fare and are longing for an "adult"-style meal. The service was cheerful, the before-dinner bread basket was well stocked with delicious bread and lots of butter, and there is enough space between tables for dinner to feel private. That makes it also idea for business lunches and dinners.
