“A good stop for coffee and pastry”
Review of Julien's

Competitive with many "coffee shops" in the Halifax area.
Clean and bright.
Staff can be "cool", but I have noticed a distinct "thawing" the last number of visits.
A very good selection of pastries, along with croissant sandwiches, cheese platters, and Staff of Life samosas and pakoras.
Today, the Danish cinnamon bun was fresh, with the proper amount of sweetness.
The Americano coffee was bitter - should be strong - not bitter.
They have 15 or 16 varieties of Artisanal bread baked in a wood-fired oven.
A large sheltered patio is a perfect place to sit during the fine weather.
Good wi-fi that doesn't require a password.

We stopped by on July 2 so they had not had their delivery yet due to the holiday. Sadly no chocolate croissants so I settled for a chocolate coffee cake on the style of an opera cake. I would never have guessed it was a day old and only knew because they had not had a delivery. Tea was very nice. Staff were friendly.

Living in France I could always rely on the authenticity of this 'salon de thé' or French pastry shop every time I visited Halifax.
It's unfortunate that this is no longer the case.
- The ambience has changed,
- not all staff are welcoming,
- some of the French pastries are definitely not fresh or in some cases not even French,
If you've never been to a real French pastry shop or the OLD Julien's then you may find it all right. But as far as value for money goes, there are other places more deserving.
This said, their coffee was good.

There was a time when this was a lovely authentic French patisserie, but no more. The paintings and music can't cover up the fact that their baked goods are clearly prebaked and frozen, and defrosted each day to serve. The coffee is pretty good, prices decent but the service is a little "cool" and there are certainly fresher croissants to be had elsewhere.
Also, not sure why the products are posted in French when the staff can't speak a word of it....
If you are looking for a decent coffee and passable baked goods, it's fine. If you want an authentic French café/ pâtisserie, go elsewhere.
