Nearly a year ago we were given a certificate for Onyx but put off using it as we've never been there before and have our favourites around Halifax. Finally, one warm summer evening we found ourselves at Onyx (at the new location on Argyle). I was hesitant, fearing that it was going to be one of those wine bars that are trying to hang on to the 90s Sex and the City vibe. I was wrong!

Onyx is in the restaurant district downtown Halifax, surrounded by a variety of watering holes and fine dining. With a large patio (complete with warmers), you are welcomed into a warm and inviting dining room. Booths, tables, arm chairs, you have your choice. The decor is warm, lots of old wood, and understated chic. Staff are knowledgeable, friendly, courteous but not pushy or trying to get you in and out in record time. The menu is diverse, something for everyone. Portions are generous and culinary technique is elegant and adventurous. The wine menu was extensive and the cocktail menu was great fun to sample. The Urbane was my favourite - Onyx bartenders are fabulous!!

We greatly enjoyed our evening at Onyx, regret not coming sooner, and definitely plan on returning!!

I had never been to Onyx at its old location, so cannot really compare, but the new digs are a big improvement. It was very quiet the night we ate there (Monday evening), but I enjoyed it very much. Great cocktail, lovely wine list. Excellent grilled Caesar. Delicious pork loin and lovely dessert. I think my dinner companions also enjoyed their selections, which were mainly fish. The server was very pleasant and efficient. I enjoyed the meal and will definitely return. We split our bill with the other couple with us. Our share, including wine, tips, etc. was $200, which was really quite reasonable given we had all had three courses and a bottle of wine.

Went for a late dinner with co-workers after work and ordered a Fried Oyster Taco. It was amazing!! Highly recommended. It's got a good heat to it and the oysters are very tasty and fresh. Although it's under the Small Plate menu, it's very well portioned, each taco is huge!

Just tried out the new Onyx on Argyle. Restaurant was full of patrons and atmosphere was great. The service was attentive. The manager checked on our table and was also present and attentive. We tried the grilled cheese, excellent. The tuna carpaccio, excellent. Beef tartar, below average, soft and mushy. Shrimp appetizer, disappointing shrimp but good sauce. Lamb, the best I've had in a long time, excellent. Caesar salad, garlic far too strong, will stay with you we'll into the next day. Cornish hen, very good. Lemon desert excellent. Will put this on our Halifax repeat restaurant list

Came here tonight after seeing Chef Davis prepare one of their new dishes on TV (fried oyster tacos). Always thought that portions at the previous location were on the small side for the price, but since reopening on Argyle there are improvements on all fronts - size, price, and definitely taste. We sampled 4 of the apps/tapas and each one was incredible (fried oyster taco, pork belly buns, kobe beef pops, and "shrimp saganaki." No idea what the last one means, but it was delicious. No room for desert, but that is on our short list for our next visit (already planned out which apps we didn't get a chance to try tonight). Nice lounge area for drinks as well (the mojito was great and next time want to try one of their 'shrub drinks' after hearing so much about them). The atmosphere in here is great for a nice dinner or upscale drinks with friends. Also really impressed with service - sometimes it can be hit and miss at places like this but we had absolutely spot on service. Loved it.
