“Really liked this place”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 October 2010

I had read that the building was one of the oldest in Halifax which intrigued me so we went one nite for a pre dinner drink. After lots of bad cocktails in the Maritime Provinces, Brian really knew how to make a drink and was a good host to boot. We went back the next nite to share some food from their very reasonably priced bar menu where you get a glass of wine or martini with a smaller sized plate of food for ~$20, out of about 6 choices. Had very tasty crab coated haddock and some scallops, a nice glass of white and a Manhattan, and a tip to find the other awesome bartender in town, Cooper (at Mosaic). Cool place.

“My favourite!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 August 2010

Great atmosphere, wonderful service, local menu. My boyfriend and I got engaged there 5 years ago and its still my favorite restaurant in Halifax. It's expensive, but you get what you pay for. Nice selection of local wines too. I can't wait to go back!

“Best Food of Our Entire Trip!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 August 2010

After 9 days in the Maritimes, my husband declared he had not had a remarkable meal yet. I researched restaurants for our last night in Halifax, and The Press Gang had the best and most consistent reviews, so we decided to go there.

Dinner isn't served until after 5, we arrived at 4:40 p.m. and were told to come back in 20 minutes and that at that time, we wouldn't require a reservation. They recommended a bar close by to have a drink at while we waited.

We arrived back shortly after 5, were quickly seated and doted on for our time there. Every time my water glass was not entirely full, it was refilled. Our waitress, I believe her name was Casey, was wonderful and very personal. She was great at recommending food and sharing information about the building and restaurant. We ordered an oyster appetizer similar to Oysters Rockefeller, which was delicious. My husband then ordered the special, Rainbow Trout and I had Atlantic Lobster Done 2 Ways - both excellent choices.

We would highly recommend this restaurant to couples looking for a romantic evening and great food. For a truly special occasion, reserve Table 30 (see picture).

“Food was outstanding”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 August 2010

Had dinner here with spouse. Food was probably the best we had in NS. Service was spotty. Rolls came after request and when main course served. Water was not refilled though other diners' glasses were refilled. Had haddock dinners - outstanding. Very expensive but worth it. We were off to a side so felt overlooked.

“Beware Press Gang - it is a tourist trap!!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 July 2010

Very disappointing. Wonderful old house fixed up very nicely but the food was a couple of decades out of date. No sophistication or subtly in the preparation. "Lobster two ways" was awful: lobster overcooked; risotto not good. Goat cheese tart was some fried mushroom and bacon pieces in a small pastry shell with a slab of goat cheese on top!! The calamari was pub fare caliber. Service was friendly but not knowledgeable about the wine. More like a pub with big pretensions and way over priced food. If you like good food, eat elsewhere.
