“One Night in Pictou”
Reviewed 18 August 2012

I booked this BnB based on the reviews. I was not disappointed. Sam, the inn-keeper, is welcoming and willing to give recommendations. The rooms are well kept and very comfortable. We were in a room on the third floor. Be advised there is not an elevator in the building, as this is an old inn. No problems for us -
Breakfast was ample and fresh. We enjoyed speaking to all the travelers and hearing their of their adventures.
Showers are small stall showers - but that was not a deal breaker.

Stone Soup Cafe - excellent

We booked this last minute on our trip home from Nova Scotia. Sam (the owner) was very hospitable, and we very much enjoyed our quick overnight stay in Pictou. There is a delicous pizzeria accross the street, a fun pub another block away, as well as the waterfront which is just a little further. The rooms were basic and very clean. Breakfast was tasty, so all in all the price can't be beat. This is not the W or some big hotel chain, so baring that in mind this is really a 5/5 in my books.

We try to find a good balance between cost and services so we had a look through the local guide book and made a few cold calls when we arrived in Pictou.
The Auberge Walker seemed like a good place, the price was decent, and the person on the phone was very helpful and pleasant.

If I remember correctly it is located at the end of the "downtown strip", lol. Pictou is very small and Auberge Walker is in a great location to get out and explore the town.
There is parking out back but you can pull up out front and park as well if there is space.

If you have problems with stairs, the Auberge Walker Inn is not for you unfortunately.

The halls are well decorated with items I believe the owner has personally collected over the years. There were building plans for the building on the wall by the check-in desk, I love seeing this sort of thing in a building. Often, those plans are held in local archives and not on public display. It really lets you get a glimpse of just how old the building is and can even show you odd architectural designs from time-to-time.

The woman at the desk was also the live-in owner. She's a very pleasant woman that has done a lot of travelling herself and has taken on this B&B as a semi-retired lifestyle I believe. She has a dog (collie mix-breed if I remember), which means you may not be able to bring your dog, though call and ask as she might not mind if it's a smaller breed (our friends had 2 Black Russian Terriers, so it just wasn't a good idea for them to stay there lol)
She let us peek at a few rooms before letting us pick which one we got, which was a nice change.

We got a basic room.
The room was very nice. Well kept and maintained, clean. The bathroom was a good size and stocked. It wasn't extravagant but it was definitely one of the nicer privately owned places I have stayed and had everything we needed.

There is a smoking area out back. In fact, the entire backside of the hotel has a nice, staired balcony setup. I smoked on the balcony, though I'm unsure if I was running afoul of bylaws.

The breakfast was great. The dining area is very clean, stylish, and the owner herself encouraged conversation between everyone. I was a bit groggy and didn't get to take full advantage of the chatting, but it did make a for a very enjoyable atmosphere for breakfast.
There was a good selection of cereal, fruit, breads, spreads, and drinks. She was nice enough to brew me a good pot of orange pekoe tea... and I must say it's not often I meet someone that appreciates a good cup of tea or knows how to brew a proper pot, but she knew.

There is a library with a book trading feature, meaning you must leave a book to take a book. This is great for travellers who might have chewed through their own books.

Unfortunately it is not wheelchair accessible, but you can hardly hold that against a heritage building. There is a history to the building if you look into it. :)

There are some great little restaurants in Pictou and some amazing things to go look at. Be sure to ask the owner for suggestions based on your interests, she is a lovely woman that takes a genuine interest in her customers. It is rare to be made to feel so at home at an inn these days.

Room Tip: Ask if you could look at a few available rooms first.

We had a great stay at this inn in October. We were the only guests there and the owner was very gracious. She talked with us in the evening and at breakfast, which was an above average continental breakfast. The room was squeeky clean. The shower was quite small. You needed to be careful turning so you didn't bump the faucets, but no complaints.

Pictous is a charming town but a little depressed. I hope that it can survive. A wonderful and interesting waterfront. It was well worth the side trip and to get away from the tourists areas.

Room Tip: No elevator so be prepared for stairs. There is a flight of stairs even to the check in counter. We...

Our family of 4 (two kids: 11 & 6), enjoyed a brief stopover at the Auberge Walker Inn, on the last day of our trip. The location was ideal--less than a 90 minute drive to the airport--all highway. The inn is right in downtown Pictou, and though bordered by empty buildings, once you get inside, you know you are somewhere special, with plenty of antiques, big baseboards, and towering ceilings in the rooms. Sam, the innkeeper, was very chatty to us (and we're Americans), and accomodating, volunteering some discount coupons for a local concert down the street, and a good suggestion for pizza right across the street from the inn. She also made a point of remembering everyone's name for the next morning, to make introductions at the continental breakfast (cereal, yogurt, some baked goods, and the best coffee my wife had, the entire trip). The room was basic, but clean--one queen bed for my wife and I, and a single twin bed fit the kids fine, small television for viewing, and bathroom with a tight shower. We also had a newspaper waiting for us, at our door in the morning. Cons: the stairs, but this is an old building; no parking lot, per se, but there were plenty of empty spaces on her block; and Sam has you pay before you sleep (but perhaps she's had bad experiences with other travelers). Still, if you are looking for that final hotel on the way back to Halifax Airport, or if you need a break from driving, heading to or from PEI or Cape Breton, the Auberge Walker is a good place to stop. But if you are traveling well after we stayed there, call ahead and see if Sam is still running it. I came across an advertisement, listing the property for sale, in the local paper that morning.
