“Excellent museum attraction”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 June 2013

Although the masts and rigging on the boat were removed the museum itself more than makes up for it. Lots to see in this well- presented museum.

“Don't miss”

The museum is well done and going onto the ship is an experience in itself. We easily spent 2 hours because we read all the history.

“No rigging”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 June 2013

The replica ship was open to wander but there were no masts and no rigging. The volunteers told us that they are all being replaced and updated. The masts and rigging are laid out on the dock area before getting to the ship.

You can visit the captain's cabin, the passenger and crew quarters, and see down into the hold of the ship. There is also some information concerning the building of the ship and its history posted in the captains cabin. There is not a whole lot to see.

“A LIVING HISTORY EXPERIENCE”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 May 2013

If you happen to be passing through, waiting for a ferry crossing or just visiting the Town of Pictou, Nova Scotia you must make a point of visiting the replica of the Ship Hector and the Hector Heritage Quay located on the main harbour front street.

The original Ship Hector was famous for delivering the first Scottish settlers to Pictou in the year 1773. The historic voyage took about eleven weeks and included a two week delay caused by a strong gale that blew her back out to sea. Now you have just parked your vehicle on the street or behind the RCMP station directly across the street opposite the Quay. Now see the monument that pays tribute to these hearty Scots. Behind this tribute you will see...in all her glory ...the replica of the good ship Hector. Now take a deep breath and just try to imagine what that voyage would have been like. Can you imagine 170 passengers aboard a ship of this size and driven, not by engine, but only by the wind. No separate quarters but only a large lower deck that became the living quarters for all passengers. These poor souls who had to endure the close quarters and the storms at sea for almost three months.

Now you are ready to have a real life history lesson and the Hector Heritage Quay will open your eyes. You will see for yourself and be amazed at the artifact replicas and the mock-up scenes that were developed to give you the feeling that you are actually on-board. After that you will now be prepared to board the Hector and experience her decks first hand. Be prepared for a real eye opener when you realize the size of the ship and the number of passengers and what they must have gone through to survive such a voyage. On the visit of the grounds you will have the opportunity to chat with shipbuilders and blacksmiths as they explain their crafts on the job. Finally a visit to the company store to pick up a few reminders of your special voyage on-board the Ship Hector.

This visit will take a good couple of hours, and more if you have the time, for you to enjoy this exhibit totally. Educational fun for the whole family. Do not forget your camera....and Welcome Aboard!

“Enjoyable afternoon”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 December 2012 via mobile

The Hector and the waterfront area in Pictou was a pleasant and unexpected surprise. The replica of the original ship is worth seeing and we got some great pictures. There's a small marina for fishing and pleasure boats as well as a nice walk along the harbour front. Good parking and its a short walk to the Main Street which is also good for a visit. We ended up having lunch and spending most of the afternoon walking around.
