We rolled up to Dolan's, Pictou on our motorcycle (at the location shown in photo above) in September, having made loose arrangements with the innkeeper (didn't need a firm booking due to time of year) only to find a an empty inn BUT friendly instructions on the door as to how to proceed. We entered, phoned the # given and were told on the phone by the innkeeper to take our pick of the available rooms (keys were in the room latches!). .We felt right at home, checked all the rooms and picked not our favourite (which was the loft room) but the next best which was right in our price range for this particular trip. We'll take the loft another time as it is actually a small apartment.
The room was spacious and cozy with nice furnishings and window treatments, an air tub in the private bathroom, shared balcony looking out to the street and harbour, enough of a kitchenette for two, very comfy bed, and just enough old fashioned touches left in place - note the old doors and knobs which do work like they are antique (not a problem, but cute).
We did not need to use the a/c unit in the window but the radiator heat worked VERY well and was perfectly silent. Ahhhhh.
On this trip we didn't utilize the common rooms with comfy leather furnishings and pool table, preferring to just enjoy the local dining (which is really within walking distance) and kick back in front of our own tv with the local newspapers - purchased at the excellent convenience store across the street. We also enjoyed an evening stroll to Tim's.
I would definitely return to Dolan's. We thought we would be alone in the inn but it filled up each of the 3 nights we stayed.
We consider ourselves part-time Pictonians and, as such, felt right at home at this inn. Dolan owns several and varied properties in Pictou and we cannot comment on any of the other buildings except the one shown in the photo but I strongly suspect they are all of equal quality. We felt we received truly excellent value at this property.

Room Tip: Ask lots of questions about which property you are going to stay. They are scattered throughout the town and some may suit you better than others. Please note that there is an excellent pool in town at the fisheries training school which offers free swims and other programs. You can google the town of Pictou and find the number to inquire. Also, there are at least 3 excellent beaches within less that 1/2 hour drive of town.

Our family stayed in a Dolan's Inn and Suites in downtown Pictou prior to catching the ferry. The lady from Dolan's had us set up on the third floor of a building but upon seeing our luggage, and my bad knee, she took us to another one of their suites closer to the center of Pictou. The accommodations were great and slept five of us comfortably. It had had full kitchen, two twin beds, a pull out couch and ajacent parking.

Room Tip: Ask for the place on Coleraine St.

After reading the reviews this place seems to get mixed ratings and I can see why., I asked the proprietor how many rooms they had...20+ in various buildings. This isn't clear online.

We booked a 'silver' room...and were upgraded to a one bedroom apartment in a different building. Brand new..yellow building right near Sharon's diner. Full kitchen, big bathroom. No complaints....
Neither the TV nor wifi worked that night, but we're guessing it was because of a storm that came through and dropped alot of rain. Couldn't get a signal...

We've spent two holidays (July 2010, and again in July 2011) with Dolan's Inns, both times staying at the Silver House (and for part of one visit, staying at the apartment beside the convenience store). Relative to the cost of other accommodation in the area, these apartments are excellent value. For less than the price of a hotel room, you can have an apartment with full kitchen, bathroom, bedrooms, sitting room -- which is great when you're travelling with a family. What has brought us back is the location. The apartments are located in the heart of the town. The Silver House, for instance, is on the main street, with a balcony looking up the main street, and out across the harbour. Downtown Pictou is quiet at night, so noise is not a problem, but it's handy to be able to walk to the pub, or to a restaurant. The apartment beside the convenience store was very well equipped (it has a washing machine as well as a full kitchen -- better overall than the Silver House), but the Silver House has a better location and balconies. The apartments are all in older buildings, but they have character, and there's a real sense of living in the heart of the community that you don't get in much tourist accommodation. We've come back once, and we'll probably come back again.

A group of 5, all in our 40's and 50's from Germany and Canada. Owner is a uniformed policeman who stood infront at his cop car with his K9 dog watching us the whole time while we unloaded without any introduction making us think we were getting a ticket. Then later that night his manager barged into our apartment at 9:30 pm without waiting for us to answer the door and looked all around the apartment. I inquired if the visit was for payment - which we agreed was to to be done at checkout- but said she alreday charged my credit card ,without my authorization. Unacceptable business practices of trespassing and use of credit card information.
The apartment was run down and in need of updates.Left after one night...no need to stay longer in Pictou anyways.

Room Tip: Stay in New Glasgow if you wish to be closer to Melmerby Beach as it has more options and more to do in town.
