I've stayed here three summers in a row. Generally it's very good value at $24/night. It is student dorms, and they are set up with six single rooms in each pod (4 pods to a floor) and each pod shares kitchen, sitting room and TV. There are also two bathroom units per pod, so four toilets, two showers and four sinks. The toilet/shower parts are private. The sinks are shared. Each room has a bed (quality varies), pillow, sheet blanket, a desk and bureau and closet space with a couple of hangers. There is no air conditioning in the rooms but there is one in the kitchen/living area, so depending on how friendly you are with whoever is in your pod, you can open your own room doors and share. There is no internet.
Pods are assigned men only/women only. I think there are some co-ed ones. It's not a place to travel as a couple, try Georgian suites for that. It is a great place to travel as a group, with friends as they will give you your own pod and then you can share everything. As a single, and having experienced good and bad pod-mates, it's an experience.
What I found in the summer of 2010 is that there were rooms rented by welfare locals. This is the creepy part of my title, because they weren't fellow travellers, they LIVED there, and it felt like you were in their space. They (I switched pods twice) also stole anything that you left out, so using the shared fridge was useless. This was a big change from my previous experiences. Last year I would have recommended, but based on 2010, I would say not to recommend unless you're going with a group and taking an entire pod.
Also the units were a bit more worn, obviously the students had lots of partying the previous year. I was in a basement pod for a night and it was very moldy. Although it is a walk up, the higher the floor the nicer the breeze. The stairs are steep.
If you're at Georgian for any reason, it's great. Go over to the library to use the internet. Parking is free so as I was driving there and driving around, it was convenient. If you're depending on public transport, it's pretty remote.
