“Destination dining”
Reviewed 17 November 2013 via mobile

It is worth a special trip to this intriguing restaurant hiding in a corner of the Roseland Plaza. The entrees and main courses have familiar elements that are paired or prepared in a special way. Shredded short ribs are paired with runny egg and salsify. Delicious. Another starter featured a perfect sweet prawn, tempuraed, then sliced, sitting on passion fruit purée. Black cod, with a lamb shank dumpling, was very good, but I felt the beautiful fish was a little overpowered by the "go withs". House made gnocchi with mushrooms and Parmesan needed more mushrooms and more interest. It was hard to follow those particularly inspired starters. The wine list was very good, and easy to find a choice to match with the food. Service is friendly, if not refined. We will return, curious to enjoy another thoughtful menu.

“Quite the presentation”
Reviewed 26 October 2013

Bustling with screechy music. Would prefer gently strains of guitar to relax. Waiters seem stressed as I am sure they are at the mercy of the chef who rules. Menu is small, fish portions ridiculously small. Complicated ingredients- pork with red cabbage and some sort of a spicy sausage. Structured salad was divine- should have had two of those.(Same price as an entrée) Service was so slow we felt like leaving. Tried to rattle the cage but waiters seemed to be patronizing the chef. By the time we ate the place was more than half empty. We think there are better places in nicer digs to spend $600./4 people for $28. a bottle (at the LCBO) wine- $70. + at BT- you get the drift. Dessert- banana bread pudding, dry, dense. Coffee brought too early- waited 30 minutes for dessert. Another 'de riguer' place but needs an attitude overhaul.

“Foodies will have an orgasm!”
Reviewed 22 August 2013

An exquisite gourmet experience you won't forget!

Influenced by his work with Internationally acclaimed Chef Susur Lee (also known from Iron Chef America), Chef Matteo has found perfection! While every dish is bursting with flavor and texture, it's not overdone, so each ingredient can have its moment in the spotlight. Your mouth will explode, with every bite a new indulgent experience.

Location is odd (Shopper's Drug Mart plaza), but the restaurant has a private courtyard so the view and ambience is artistic and a bit eccentric. Not at all pretentious. To truly enjoy the culinary experience, be prepared to spend @ $200 per person (well worth every penny!). We go to Blacktree for every special occasion and can never get tired of it.

Matteo is a true genius. We've eaten at some of the best restaurants in the world and Blacktree is one of our favourites.

We try to to go once per month to sample the ever changing menu. Service is always excellent.
