This old mansion-converted inn has a charming atmosphere with lots character and the hospitable service added a nice homely touch as well, making our visit especially comfortable. The rooms are spacious and comfortable with beautiful antique interior design and decor, in addition to modern necessities and appliances. There is also a nice common lounge area and separate candle-lit dining area by a wood fireplace, which is where we had breakfast. The breakfast was great, nice variety, freshly prepared and served. Parking is provided behind the inn, and the location is perfect for anyone visiting Queen's university or downtown Kingston. We definitely will be staying here again when we visit Kingston.

If you're looking for more character and charm than the chains provide, at around the same rates, this is the place: a lovely old mansion conveniently located between Queen's and downtown on a quiet treed street. Yes, its layout is higgledy-piggledy, and the rooms are far from the standardized geometry of the chains, but that's part of the charm: you could be in a family hotel in England, for instance. Warm staff, a genuine (but never pushy) desire to make you feel at home, and a great included breakfast. I'll certainly stay there again next time I'm in Kingston.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front have a pretty street view

The hotel is conveniently located for anyone visiting Queen's University. It is a little outdated which is often portrayed as "charming". Fact is that the room's floors are no level anymore and that the ceiling comes awfully close to your head when searching for light. Breakfast provided is great though and atmosphere is charming. Parking is provided. If you prefer charm over modern, you should have a try.

Room Tip: do not take a room in the attic

Thank you for taking time to write Trip Advisor
We noticed it was from 2012 in Dec. ??

We have no doubt there are some unlevel floors , since the Inn is 153 years old and is register as an Historic Property. Although I have never taken a level to check 23 rooms to prove that.
Lifting a 4 story mansion built on limestone ,to level a floor would be impossible of course ! Guests who love the charm and history of this type of property are sometimes overwelmed with the beauty , history and charm.
You are correct in saying if you prefer modern hotels , like a Delta you would probably not appreciate the history & beauty of an Inn that contributes to the development of the "First Capital of Canada" in Kingston
The wall height in each room can be either the standard 8 1/2 feet with many rising upward to 14 feet. There is no attic in use here

My husband and I have stayed at the Hochelaga Inn several times over the past three years, and will be there again next week. It is a lovely heritage inn with loads of character, spacious rooms, comfortable common area and tasty breakfast...and very reasonably priced. The location could not be better for anyone visiting Queen's, or the downtown area, as it is an easy walk to both.

The Hochelaga Inn is steeped in history and is perfectly situated whether you're in Kingston on business, as a tourist or visiting Queen's University. We enjoyed our stay and we're impressed with the friendly and attentive service. Our room was also quite comfortable but on the smaller side (we did go for a less expensive room). The breakfast was good but not spectacular - the frittata was overcooked and the bread closer to stale than fresh. Also, if you're looking for a smaller, romantic B&B this is not the place. With 20+ rooms it feels more like a small hotel and looks a little tired. For the prices that are being charged a few updates are in order.

Good Morning:
Thank you for taking the time to review the Inn and rating us a 4 STAR.

We noticed you have reviewed nearly 500 different locations. Are you a professional reviewer or do you own an Inn?
We are proud to say that the Hochelaga INN is the largest in Kingston since it was converted in1985. Ron & I purchased the Inn about 10 years ago , where we live and work . It is definetly not a small country B&B and thats why it is called an INN . Lots of weddings and special occassions in the past because we are a perfect venue for smaller gatherings.

Breakfast is made fresh everyday. Fresh fruit & yogurt served (gluten free foods available)
daily baked croissants, eggs, cheese & coldcuts and sometimes an extra hot dish , although we advertise a light buffet breakfast it seems to be growing everday ! Lots of fun trying to decide if I should make pancakes, or omelets or breadpudding or stuffed french apple toast.
Happy you were comfortable
Regards
Anne & Ron

Jill and I love the beautiful and charming heart of historic Kingston. Hochelaga Inn is part of that. It is situated on a lovely historic street in the heart of Kingston, close to a large park. There was an English classic car show in the park one day we were there.

We were warmly greeted by the owner when we arrived. The room was charming. The common areas were relaxing, comfortable and roomy. The history of the place was well preserved. The breakfast buffet had a great presentation, variety and taste. We are vegetarian and wheat free, and were able to work out these arrangements with ease.

The house is truly beautiful!!

We are returning Mid November.

We have a history with the Hochelaga Inn. My husband and I met in Kingston 26 years ago and we were engaged at the Hochelaga Inn in 1989. We went back for our tenth anniversary and we just went again for our 23rd anniversary. It happened to be my husband's 25th reunion weekend from Queens as well. Almost the whole Inn was rented to classmates. We felt like we owned this mansion. We had cocktails before we went out in the evening and then stayed up and visited in the living room until 2 in the morning. Our room was beautiful , Room 101. It had a lovely King Bed and a bathtub. I highly recommend treating yourself to one or two nights at the charming Hochelaga Inn.
