Description: Whenever available, we use local fruit to give our specialty sorbettos the wonderful depth of flavour that you have grown to love. You've got it; we are all about local! So... what's the difference? A quick tutorial: Gelato is milk based, so less butterfat than ice cream. It also has less air, which makes the flavour really pop! Sorbetto is water based, so packed with taste, also great for those who want to go dairy free. Ice cream has cream in it to give it that rich, velvety flavour. Our popular frozen yogurt is the best tasting around because the two main ingredients are milk and yogurt. Now you know!

I have to say this may be some of the best gelato outside of Italy. My favorite gelato is in Capri. The only thing that makes that gelato better than here is they are making fresh waffle cones and are still warm when they hand them. The gelato here is extremely authentic and delicious.

Fantastic. We visited Kingston in May and this was definitely the best gelato I have had outside of Italy.

We waited to try Mio Gelato two times before giving it a thumbs down but both times, lack of flavour ( tried pistachio, lemon, chocolate, green tea, peach)
More importantly, the gelato, on both visits, had ice chips in it. Quality should be the defining cornerstone of a local business.

It is a hot day and they should have had line ups out the door but none local was there- just tourists off the buses.

We were so hoping for an italian gelato- maybe not as delicious as inVenice but something close would have been nice.

So save your money, walk down the street to White Mountain and get ice cream.

Oh and the cupcakes look like a cash grab on a fad right now. Not appealing just there.

Thank you for taking the time to post your experience with Mio Gelato. This is our fifth year in the gelato business and our recipes have developed over those five years to where they are today. All of our ingredients with the exception of fruits (sourced locally when possible) are imported from the finest suppliers in Italy. The strength of flavours is always subjective and in fact we have had other recent feedback that two of the flavours you mentioned were too strong as opposed to too weak. However, we appreciate your feedback and will take it into account when determining if any changes to recipes need to be made.

Two years ago we purchased some additional manufacturing equipment (at great expense), the purpose of which is to improve our product by making it smoother and creamier and eliminating larger ice crystals. This was one of the best things we have ever done and has taken our product to another level of quality that we are quite proud of. Thus I am surprised to hear of ice chips in your gelato. As our store is located just steps from Lake Ontario, humidity is something we deal with but we make our gelato in small batches to ensure freshness. Only rarely have I seen the humidity create any frost on the gelato. We will monitor this though to ensure it isn't an issue.

I can also assure you that we have developed quite a following from local Kingstonians and we are quite humbled by it. Our business continues to grow each year and we were honoured to recently receive the Certificate of Excellence from tripadvisor.

We have been trained to make gelato from the head chef of the top gelato school in Italy and have travelled to Italy seeking out the best in ingredients. While we can not recreate the experience of actually being in Venice, we do make our gelato with the same ingredients they do, in the same machines they do, having been trained the way they have. While we are not perfect we are trying our best to do things the right way.

Our cupcakes are new this year. Our gelato chef is a culinary school graduate and has always wanted to do cupcakes so we decided to add them to our line-up. We researched the top cupcake shops in Ontario and have brought one on as a consultant. We are thrilled with the quality.

The gelateria was packed with customers who were served by an enthusiastic young team of servers who worked hard to reduce the line size on a very busy night as the town held its buskers festival.
