We love the Clifton Hill area of Niagara Falls and always stay on the Hill. We’ve stayed at the expensive corner suites of the Sheraton on the Falls with amazing views of the Falls and at the medium priced Comfort Inn Clifton Hill and Travelodge at the Falls. On this trip, we wanted a more budget friendly place to stay but still wanted to be on Clifton Hill. So we decided to try the Thriftlodge at the Falls.

I’ll admit we were a bit worried about what the Thriftlodge would be like and whether it would be so bad as to ruin our vacation. I’m happy to report that we were pleasantly surprised! Yes, the hotel is old and could definitely use some updating but our room was nicely sized and was very clean. We really have no complaints about the room or our stay.

We arrived in Niagara Falls at 8am. We knew it was way too early for the 3pm check-in but we stopped at the hotel anyways to check for sure. The office staff told us that there were no rooms ready yet but gave us a parking pass and told us to stop back around noon. We did some sightseeing then went back at noon and they did have a room ready for us. As we walked into the room we breathed a sigh of relief. The room looked clean and inviting. We checked the beds for bedbugs and did not find any. The bathroom, while decorated in 1970’s green, seemed clean. A nice amenity was that there was a sink in the bathroom and a second sink just outside the bathroom.

The air-conditioner was a window type unit built into the wall above the door. It was a bit noisy but cooled the room nicely. In looking for bedbugs we noted that the mattresses looked newer and after sleeping on them, we found that they were very comfortable. The TV was the older style and not a flat screen but the picture was fine and the channel choices adequate.

They have free wifi that was a bit spotty but with some patience we could always finally get a signal.

Parking is free/included in the price of the room, which is great but the parking lot was busy as non-guests can pay to park in the lot also. Many of the TripAdvisor reviews complained about the karaoke being loud late into the night and while that is true, the complaints are not justified as it is often mentioned in these reviews and upon check-in the office staff notifies you of the karaoke and also has a box on the reservation form for you to check and acknowledge that you were notified about the possible issue. It wasn’t an issue for us, as we were on vacation and wouldn’t dream of going to bed early. Our room was fairly close to the karaoke stage but with the door closed and the air-conditioning and tv on, it wasn’t too noticeable. The karaoke promptly ended each night at 2am.

The Thriftlodge does not have a free breakfast but they did provide coupons for $3.00 off breakfast at the Clifton Hill Family Restaurant. We did not eat breakfast there, so did not use the coupons.

In conclusion, if you are looking to be in the heart of all the action on Clifton Hill and want a budget friendly place to stay, you can’t go wrong with the Thriftlodge.

Stayed here for 1 night in September right after Labour Day. You can't beat the location - next to the Falls, across the street from restaurants, games and other fun attractions. One parking spot is included in your room, additional parking costs $15/night. Room itself is pretty standard, nothing fancy - but its clean and that's what matters.

As for the karaoke bar, yes - you can hear the music from your room. Yes, it goes to 2am. Upon check-in the front desk advises of this and requests for you to sign off on the waiverthat you are ok with this. If you need complete silence in order to sleep, then this is probably not the best place to stay (or families).

Overall, you can't beat location and if you don't mind singing along to the music tunes its a great value.

I have been to the falls on 4 occasions three time in this hotel. it is close to everything so you do not really need to use your car. yes it is true there is a karaoke bar next to the hotel but your are told before you register and you must sign a waiver in order to stay. if you do, do not complain. there is a pool you can use located at the hotel next to this one. we have stay here in winter time and in the summer. would not stay anywhere else.

Room Tip: we always try to stay in the same room 107.
