Overview – a clean, well run, budget hotel (similar standard to a Holiday Inn Express or Comfort Inn) in a decent location. However, if you are expecting a view of the Falls from your room or anywhere in the hotel, this is not the place for you. We booked this hotel specifically to use the Fallsview Waterpark and had twin 5 year olds with us.
Location – fairly central – on a quiet street, a five minute walk to Fallsview Avenue and to Clifton Street. It is on a slight hill so you are walking uphill back to the Skyline from Fallsview Avenue. There is a Planet Hollywood restaurant and large multi-storey car-park directly across the street. The hotel has its own attached car park but spaces are limited. It cost us approximately $10Cdn/day to park at the hotel – we were provided with a ticket to place on the car’s dashboard. If the hotel’s car park was full, you could use the same ticket to park at the multi-storey across the street.
Hotel Staff – very courteous and friendly.
Hotel room - We stayed in a Courtyard room with two queen beds on the ground floor. The room’s only window faced an indoor courtyard. The courtyard was pleasant and bright with a variety of seating. However, as the courtyard tended to be a ‘meeting spot’ for guests, we often had to keep our bedroom curtains drawn for privacy. As a result, the room was dark all the time, even with all the lights on. This didn't bother us too much as it was just a place to sleep. The room itself was clean and comfortable. There was an air-condition unit in the room which was loud - we could control the thermostat in the room but every time the air-condition unit kicked in which seemed to be often in the night, it woke us up. You could fill in a card to let housekeeping know a preferred time slot you wanted your room cleaned or not at all. The housekeeping service appeared very well run – there would be many housekeeping carts around all the time.
Room amenities - plenty of towels, basic coffee/tea maker, tv with a couple of kids' channels, wireless internet access, free daily newspapers (at reception), empty bar fridge for own use (this was great). There is NO in-room safe -perhaps not to be expected from this level of hotel but it would be a great plus.
Bathroom – very clean and seemed new. However, it is also very small (considering that this hotel caters to families) and lacked counter space as well as hanging space for towels.
Noise – It is true that the walls were thin and sound travelled easily. We were in Courtyard 3 and the guests there were considerate and kept children’s noise levels down.
Connected walkway to Waterpark – We liked the indoor skywalk to Fallsview Waterpark – this was like a private entrance to the Waterpark for Skyline guests. The entrance to the skywalk at the hotel is on the 3rd floor - however, elevators only go up to the second floor. There is a lift for disabled persons to take you from the 2nd to the 3rd floor but you will need to phone for assistance. We noticed many parents carrying strollers up the final short flight of stairs as this was presumably faster. When you get to the top, the door is accessed using your room card. Just for your information, if you stayed at the Crowne Plaza, there is bank of elevators in the hotel that takes you straight up to the waterpark’s main entrance – however, this same elevator is connected to the multi-storey parking garage so there would be stops on the way. When it is busy, there can be long waits for the elevators.
Breakfast Package – we booked a waterpark breakfast package. It was certainly cheaper to book the waterpark this way. It cost an extra $30 total per day for a family of four to add the breakfast element – Upon check in, you are given a voucher for Perkins Restaurant that is right next door - this entitled you to a set breakfast of 2 eggs, sausage or bacon, toast, hashbrowns and a beverage or a $10 Cdn credit per head ($40 Cdn total). The breakfast at Perkins had generous serving portions but was average quality. They also have a kids menu that you could order from for under $10Cdn per meal.
All in all, a good basic hotel.
