My wife and I stayed only one night...travelled from Montreal. Reached the Gate House late in the night. Great welcome, clean, very functional....the manager invited us to have a glass of wine. Good breakfast...and off we went walking on the commercial high street. Good location too......

While this is not your typical NOTL hotel/inn...it is worth considering for your next visit! There are no antiques or War of 1812 references here...think 80s/white Italian marble deco instead. While this hotel will not appeal to everyone's design-taste, the guestrooms were very clean and well maintained, the deluxe rooms were extremely spacious (20x20?), and very conveniently located on the main street. The beds were small (2 double beds in the deluxe rooms), but nice linens and very comfortable. It was reasonably priced at $225/night - which included a delicious continental breakfast (plated and served - fresh croissant, yoghurt, cheese, fruit, and prosciutto/ham). When we booked the guestrooms, we also made a reservation for dinner at the onsite Italian hotel. While they had forgotten to take down our reservation, the staff was quick to get a table ready for us. The service was a bit slow (2+ hours), but we weren't in any rush - and the food was great.

Last but not least...and definitely worth a mention - this hotel was one of the only places willing to book 1-night accommodations on the weekend (most others had a 2-3 night minimum) during peak season.

Room Tip: Room 9 - bright red carpet, large and very clean. Room 1 - bright teal carpet, clean and VERY VERY...

We had never been here before and had no reservation. We drove up and down once and came upon The Gate House and it looked lovely. They had vacancy so we saw two rooms and chose one on lower floor as there was no elevator. Staff on desk gave us a really good rate. This also included breakfast but we had to leave really early next morning, the staff in morning packed us a to go breakfast which was fantastic. Great service and a great stay. Place and grounds are beautiful.

My friend and I booked four nights for the Shaw Festival and found our room extremely pleasant. Two double beds and twin sinks bathroom helped to make it a great stay. Certainly the location was ideal as we did not have a car. My only complaint would be that the room itself, while large was slightly sterile and their was no view to speak of. Also, I wish there had been a place to relax in the lobby or outside as the weather was beautiful, but those are minor quibbles. I found the staff to be quite friendly. Continental breakfast each morning was very good. Not the most 'charming' place in town but still worth staying at.

We made the mistake of stopping here for a late lunch/early dinner on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. As we approached the patio of the restaurant staff members averted their eyes. This should have been a clue. We were not in casual dress but rather a notch or two above the Niagara vacationer garb. When we sought out management to find if serving would begin at 5pm we were told "I might have a seat for the two of you in the sun." (All but one of the patio tables were under umbrellas.) Even this offer came with what borders on impoliteness for Canadians.
Either this staff is so browbeaten that they hate their job or they seriously misunderstand their standing. We returned to our room with a view of both falls in the Niagara Hilton and enjoyed a fine meal from our perch on the 50th floor. In the 20+ years we have been visiting Canada (about twice a year) we have not encountered such constipated rudeness. Caveat emptor.

Room Tip: Tripadvisor reviewers have clearly had different experiences at The Gate House. If you'd like to...

We stayed here for one night while visiting the Shaw Festival and were very comfortable. The hotel is a little bit out of the fray of the town but still on the main street; its simple but very tasteful interior is a welcome contrast to the often too elaborate decor of other hotels in the town. The breakfast, which was included, was wonderful, fresh juice and cooked food as well as lovely freshly baked croissants. We would definitely look forward to staying here again,

After a recommendation from a friend my 91 year old Father and I enjoyed a meal at Ristorante Giardino on August 1st. As season's pass holders at the Shaw Festival we regularly enjoy eating in local restaurants often with friends or family. We will not be returning to Giardino's however because of inadequate access for my Dad who uses a walker. We were unable to open the door at the end of the ramp when we arrived and in spite of mentioning it on arrival the situation did not improve when we left. Another open door blocked the exit to the ramp and there was a large plant in the way. Apparently a disabled person is expected to go through a door, turn around in a small space to close the first one, move a large plant and then hope that the door will open. This would be awkward for an able bodied person let alone someone with mobility issues. Another tight U turn would be required to reach the ramp. My Dad's attempt to negotiate the stairs ended in a fall. Fortunately I was able to catch him so there were no broken bones and the only injuries were a bleeding arm and his pride. Another restaurant patron came to our aid before hotel or restaurant staff. When the concierge finally appeared he was less than apologetic. It really doesn't matter if food is good when attitude is not.
