Oban Inn, Spa and Restaurant
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 4 October 2011

We stayed at the Oban Inn as part of a group, and were very pleased with the friendly, helpful staff. (Robert deserves special mention here). We had a corner King Room with a fireplace, which was lovely and quiet. I am not going to tell you which one, as I want it to be available when we return! The other queen rooms were very comfortable but a bit on the small side. The only meal we ate at the hotel was the breakfast, as being part of group activities we were on the go all day. My only comment about the buffet would be the same as previous reviewers have noted... it lacks variety. Although it is much more breakfast than we would normally eat at home, we would have appreciated more fresh fruit, less pastries and breads, and perhaps some cold meats and cheeses as a protein alternative.
We enjoyed the pool area, lovely gardens and tranquil setting. The location is excellent for Niagara On The Lake.. a mere stroll to the lakefront and the main street.
Special thanks for the use of the "Board Room" for late night drinks and for making our group experience so enjoyable!

The king size room at the Oban Inn was quite nicely appointed and exceeded our expectations.
The service and front desk were all very nice and helpful. The location was perfect. Walking distance to all the shops and restaurants downtown. Two negatives were the low quality continental breakfast they offered, I have had better at a Holiday Inn Express, and the condition of the sitting area at the front of their entrance, it was covered in spider webs and in need of care. Other than that a wonderful Inn. Also had a nice backyard and pool/spa area that we did not use.

The front desk staff were very gracious and helpful. The dining room staff and menu were 1st class. We were surprised that the suite TV was limited and did not offer current movies for purchase. We very much enjoyed the Shaw theatre and the shopping. Given that at booking time, I had made the agents aware it was a very special wedding anniversary, nothing was said or done. I was not expecting anything, but surprised none the less; especially as the Oban is a world class place, and was so highly reccommended.

I have visited this Inn in August after long deliberations with myself on its price and reasonability. The Inn is absolutely outstanding: design, upkeep, staff, location. I have been cruising around and could not have enough of it. Library room on a second floor, Spa with world class massage, complimentary teas, lobby, garden, pool. Everything is amazing.

The only disappointment is breakfast! How difficult it must be to have a charming choice of freshly baked muffins, bacon and eggs, fresh fruits, variety of breads, cheese and cold cuts? There are't that many people to serve it too? Very puzzling. The breakfast in the gorgeous premises with garden view was completely inadequate. Hard boiled eggs and canned fruits (during the peach season!), one choice of bread and the cheapest yogurt.

Very very strange on their part. All great impression from the stay had greatly diminished. As you try to uncover cold and tasteless eggs you keep wondering: "Do they really care after all ???

We only stayed at the hotel for one night as a getaway from Toronto but would definately recommend the hotel. The room we had faced the golf course and the lake so had a very pleasant view.

The service was good, the room was pleasantly decorated and had decent amenties and the the hotel had off street parking.

The food at dinner at the restaurant was excellent however the service was a bit slow and they only had one waiter on to serve a relatively large number of patrons.

Breakfast on the other hand was barely adequate. For a continental breakfast some additional variety wouldnt go astray.

Oban is not quite a bed and breakfast, as we expected. Less homey than that, yet far more accommodating than a hotel. A comfortable in-between experience with all the amenities of a top-notch hotel yet maintaining the relaxed and cozy feel of a B&B. Try it for those unique attributes, if for no other reason. We chose a Premium King Garden Cottage, a large, luxurious room with soft bed & pillows and a private patio overlooking the enclosed lawn..
Pros: Quiet, relaxing pool & hot tub away from the crowds. Marvelous open spaces with well landscaped grounds. Large, luxurious room, soft bed & pillows.Across the street from Lake Ontario (and the Niagara on the Lake Club - a great patio on the water for dinner).
Cons: The only less than stellar item was the buffet breakfast. A limited menu, all low-cal - very healthy in keeping with the needs of spa guests, but not so much for the hearty eater. That's OK, just be aware.

My wife and I had been deciding where to spend our 3rd-year anniversary and after a couple of other choices, we chose the Oban Inn with the "Spa and Shaw" package. Originally, we were going to stay for one night, but after seeing the room they booked us in, we ended up requesting to stay one MORE night. For two nights, watching a play, having an exquisite dinner, an 1-hr massage treatment, awesome breakfast and encouraging smiles from all the staff, who could go wrong? We would totally recommend this to anyone who plans to visit the Niagara-on-the-Lake area. The Oban is conveniently located just walking distance away from the main strip. And the price is excellent!
