The area "Niagara-on-the-lake" in Ontario Canada is NOT just about the Shaw festival and the Theater. This is a small, quaint, friendly town with beautiful flora, sweet town folks, incredible vistas, and some of the best wine on the Great Lakes. To stay at the Old Bank House is a must. The Food is to die for, the location is JUST RIGHT (at the mouth of the Niagara river), and it just STEPS from the Main Street. The owners are very nice, the facility is historic and pristine, and even Chester is delightful. If you take in this town and it's facilities, TAKE YOUR BIKE, and your sneakers!!!!!

We booked this Inn for a special occasion and emailed the owners ahead asking that we have a room with comfortable seating and an area to just be able to sit, read, and relax with a reliable internet connection. We were told that the room available had seating and should be very comfortable. Unfortunately the "sofa" and chairs in the room were very uncomfortable antique pieces, the room was dark and too warm, and the chandelier hung too low and had to be dodged when walking to the bathroom. The linens on the bed and in the bathroom were worn, some of the towels bordering on threadbare. We were not given soap for our second night stay and the small bar provided for our first night did not last the two days we were there.

We arrived at 3:45 PM and knocked on the locked door to check in but the note on the door said check-in was not until 4 PM. The owner did answer our knock and we were allowed to check in "early". We were given the key to our room, told the name of the room was on the door, and left to find our own way. Unfortunately, the name was not on the door of our room and we had to go find our host to determine where we were to go.

We were told that there was parking for guests and indeed there is a parking lot that holds about 6-8 cars. On this particular day, there was a full house and more cars than spots, so we had to park at a meter across the street.

The wireless internet did not adequately reach our second floor room. While we could find the network, we could not get a signal strong enough to allow us to keep our connection long enough to stay in touch with our offices, which was necessary for both of us. The internet worked better in the common areas of the first floor.

We left after two nights of a planned four night visit.

On a positive note, the location is good and the breakfasts served promptly at 9 AM were excellent.

We traveled to Niagara-on-the-Lake with another couple and stayed in adjoining rooms that, along with a third room, shared access to a nice size balcony overlooking the park and lake. We picked a wonderful time to be there -- warm, sunny days. The room we stayed in -- the Pine Room -- had two windows (one in the bathroom) overlooking the park and lake and French doors that opened onto the balcony. I agree with others who said that breakfast at 9:00 AM was inflexible, but since we didn't care, we enjoyed it. The breakfasts start with juice, move on to a fruit course, and end with a savory course (eggs benedict, scrambled eggs, pancakes the three days we were there). We found the owners very friendly. We had no special needs, so I can't speak to their willingness to make accommodations. We plan on returning some fall or spring and staying for more than 3 nights.

The house is nicely situated at the edge of a park overlooking the lake. This is the only positive comment we have about our stay/visit at the Old Bank House. We have been traveling for over 25 years and most of our stays have been in B&B's and registered Historic Places. This is a motel not a B&B!!! The owner we talked to once, at check out. The employees come in at 8:30 am, you are served breakfast at 9:00 am no earlier!!! You get nothing NADA before this time!! The breakfast is it; do not expect water, tea, coffee, cookies or wine in the early morning, day or evenings. Even the reading materials, magazines were from 1996. They advertise LUXURY, but this was not it, the linens and bed were motel quality (Red Roof). Absolutely no toiletries only shampoo from the Clarion Hotel. We tried to check out early. We waited for the owner for over an hour to show up at 8:50 am. No hospitality or service, over priced. I should have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express!!!

We enjoyed our stay this weekend! This Inn has a great location - we walked to the Shaw theaters, restaurants and shops. It sits right across from the Lake. The house is very clean. The Inn was fully booked and the owners were busy but still took time to help us with our needs. (Maybe the previous reviewer needed a baby-sitter?) We hope to go back in the spring and would definitely recommend it. It's much more charming than the pictures on line.
