“A Five Star Stay In Niagara's Wine Country!”
Reviewed 8 February 2013

We've just returned from a fabulous stay at this most excellent inn for an overnight getaway. Having been there a couple of times before for a superb dinner, we decided to take advantage of a promotion they offered and stay overnight to experience the rest of their hospitality. Well, it did not disappoint! The check-in was smooth and genuinely welcoming(rare in tourist areas), our room was a beautiful mix of contemporary high quality furnishings with the historic home itself expertly renovated for the inn. Great attention to detail is evident in the amenities: top quality bedding, robes, toiletries, towels and even current hard cover novels to read! The Richardson Room, where we stayed, had a grand gas fireplace(with original mantel), wide screen TV above, a Juliet balcony overlooking the golf course and shoreline. A glass-walled shower offered your choice of hand-held/regular shower head or the currently popular rain shower type. The bed was ultra comfortable with a feather bed under luxury cotton sheets, among the many items that are also for sale, as a memento of a wonderful stay there.
Dinner was exquisite: a butternut squash veloute "amuse bouche" to start; hand rolled gnocchi in a pool of butternut squash cream with toasted pine nuts, squash dice, sauteed spinach and fried sage leaf garnish. My main course choice was pan fried halibut(tender center, crispy crust), swiss chard, honeyed enoki mushrooms, roasted fennel and fingerling potatoes with a red wine reduction drizzle--divine!! Lighting was low and cozy, music at just the right volume, service was very good with well-informed servers who genuinely have an interest in food preparation and hospitality.
The next morning we had an equally superb breakfast served in the enclosed terrace off the lounge area. A bright airy decor of white, cream and verdigris iron furniture with floor to ceiling windows overlooking the main street into town. There was a raging snowstorm outside creating a winter wonderland scene from this cozy, warm verandah style room. We plan to return often for breakfast, lunch or dinner to further enjoy this beautiful atmosphere, since we luckily live about 20 minutes away.
In closing, do not pass up the opportunity to enjoy this establishment, even for a quick bite sometime in their lounge/bar area.

Room Tip: We were very happy with the Richardson Room for the reasons stated above.

We made our reservation at the Charles Inn by arranging for the "Candlelight and Romance" one-night Friday package. Upon arrival, we were greeted by Caitlin who said that we were given a free upgrade to a premium room called the Newark Room. We were thrilled when she brought us to a large room with antiques including a 4 poster canopy bed. We were also given a 3-hr log to burn in an open fireplace. We put on our slippers, and walked down to dine, and were seated in front of another fireplace. The small dining area boasts two fireplaces, more antiques, and beautiful crystal chandeliers. Our package allowed us to order a 3-course meal from the menu without any price restrictions. We were in heaven with our foie gras and salmon, as well as entrees, duck and diver scallops, ending with chocolate tart and pumpkin cheesecake. All was of excellent quality and wonderful flavor. Our waiter named Allan was a true gem as well. The next morning we walked downstairs in slippers to the veranda to eat a continental breakfast. Yummy, and more than we usually received in other NOTL hotels. Hot dishes were also available. Now thoroughly relaxed we were sorry to shed our slippers for our winter boots, but we did have to sadly go.

We went to The Charles Inn the other night for dinner. It's in a beautiful old building, not unlike most of the buildings in Niagara on the Lake. We didn't stay there but if the rooms follow suit of the rest of the inn, I'm sure they are really nice. Dinner was fantastic! One of the best fine dining restaurants we've ever been! I highly recommend it!

We went to the Charles Inn to celebrate our anniversary in August 2012 and stayed in the Richardson room. The fireplace and private balcony really made the experience extra special. The meal in the restaurant was one of the best I've ever had. We had the tasting menu with six different courses and wine pairings and took our time enjoying every bite/sip...we never felt rushed and were able to spend a full 3.5 hours enjoying each other and the fabulous meal. The service was excellent and we really felt at home here! Would definitely stay/dine here again!

Room Tip: Richardson room has a beautiful private balcony!

This was our second stay at the Charles Inn in Niagara-on-the-Lake and unlike our first time around I didn't become ill and have to leave (not at all the Inn's fault and they very VERY nicely credited us the cost of the room, so our stay this time was quite inexpensive). We stayed in the Onigahara Room, which is a somewhat small but elegantly appointed room facing the street (there was some street noise but it wasn't loud enough to interrupt our sleep). Overall the Inn is a beautiful, historic property right at the end of the busy and vibrant shopping strip on Queen Queen street. A continental breakfast is included in the stay and it was simple but nice. The staff at the Charles Inn is pleasant and helpful. All in all a very pleasant stay.

We were looking for an upscale dining experience during our trip to Niagara On The Lake and we did not get it here. We made a reservation through Open Table. Our table was not ready when we got there, which is fine, and the hostess told us to wait in the bar. After ten minutes went by, we tried to get her attention for an update, to no avail. When I finally met her eye and asked her how it was looking, she waved her finger in my face and said, "one minute".
She did not return.
When my fiance went to find her, she was sitting at the front desk, looking at the computer.
When we finally did get seated, the meal in itself was just okay.
To be fair, my fiance did love his soup, and our waitress was cheerful and happy to switch out his glass of wine when he found it to be undrinkable. These were the two highlights of our dining experience.
Our mains took a full 45 minutes to arrive, and was what I would describe as "passable". The scallops were overcooked and the salmon was fairly flavourless.
Other diners seemed to enjoy their meal, so perhaps we just had a bad experience, but overall, it was a lacklustre night.
The only downside of an otherwise fabulous weekend!

This an older inn,and we knew this but it is small and comfortable. They had their Fabulicious meals on for the week at different restaurants, so we could not get dinner reservations on Sat night but could eat in the bar and this was fine. It was a bit gourmet for my meat and potatoes husband, but very good. Breakfast is included, a lite continental, the second morning g we ordered the hot breakfast at half price. We were in the Magnolia room it was small but cozy, we booked this thru Sniqueaway so the price was right. Fabulous sunny warm fall weekend and we walked everywhere.

Room Tip: The rose room was larger with a fireplace ,I would request it next time, all of the bathrooms have be...
