“Colonal Butler INN is OUT of date”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 November 2013

Hotels in Niagara on the Lake are ridiculously expensive. It's a given. This was my first visit to the Best Western there and my last. $316.40. What would you think THAT room would look like? In this city of 15,000 people, tourism is high because of it's proximity to Niagara Falls, the Shaw Festival and the Wineries. This hotel was probably built during the big real estate boom of the '80's and has not changed a thing. It's all so dated. Heating lamps in the washroom!!!!!! And the beer bottle opener attached to the side of the washroom vanity. All too "Ye Old" for me. Buy something new with the crazy, high prices you are charging us. Breakfast was a kind of torture. Although free (included in the price), you are asked to enter a small room with tables and chairs surrounded by self serve centres for all your dining pleasure. It was like bumper cars in there. The room was far too small for all the Hotel's guests. People were uncomfortable with the early morning intimacy. Everything kept running low and we had one staff member in a pantry who's responsibilities were to keep things filled up. She was overwhelmed. Many of us stood around waiting for things to be replenished. It wasn't worth the wait. I wished now that I'd asked for the $ back for my free breakfast and gone downtown to Starbucks. The lovely, young girl asked if we'd had a nice stay during checkout. What are you going to tell this young person? Go to school. Get an education. Get a great paying job so you NEVER have to stay in dreadful hotels like this one. Make sure that you can afford the $500.00 a night room at the Prince of Wales Hotel in Niagara on the Lake....we answered "yes" and got out of town.

Dear Brigit, on behalf of the entire team please accept our apologies that your visit didn't meet your expectations. We do strive to provide value to our guests and to ensure they have an enjoyable stay. To clarify to other readers, the rate mentioned would have been for our Queen Superior room on a weekend during our peak months. We do periodic updates to continually provide quality, such as in the past couple years putting in flat panel TVs plus new beds and bedding. Over this winter we will be doing further updates starting with our bathrooms.

I am sorry to hear about the inconvenience you had during breakfast. We serve breakfast for at least 3 hours to give guests sufficient time to enjoy breakfast. If guests wish, we can provide trays so that guests can have breakfast either on our patio or in their room.

If any of our guests have a concern with any part of their stay we hope that they are comfortable enough to let us know while they are here so that we can address those concerns as soon as possible. We hope you will give us another chance so that you can see the updates to our rooms and for us to provide you with the experience you expect.

The hotel is located in a residential area just off the main street and very close to downtown Niagara on the Lake, it has the look and feel of an old inn but with modern amenities including unlimited free internet in the rooms.

The reception welcomed us with cookies for the family and a nice gift bag for our dog with her name printed on a large bone shaped label, it contained doggy treats and a good quality stuffed animal toy which she loved to play with in the room.

We were in a pet friendly room that was clean and accommodating, the two beds were very good and the tables and chairs were suitable for our needs. Our room had wood floors with area rug/carpets sensibly set out to allow space for a doggy bed and food bowls that were provided with the room.
The continental breakfast was very good and well set out in an adequate breakfast room. The food and service in the adjacent restaurant was very good and it is always a good sign to see that the local residents use it. There is also a few good restaurants in the area and a Tim Horton's conveniently located across the road.
We would stay at this hotel again the next time we go to Niagara on the Lake

Dear Lawrence, we are thrilled that you had such an enjoyable stay! Since we changed one of our rooms to be pet-friendly, it's been great having dogs stay with us and welcoming them with their own goody bag. I'm also glad to hear that you enjoyed our complimentary breakfast as it's a great way to start of any day, especially with our make-your-own Belgium waffles. We look forward to having you stay at the Colonel Butler Inn again the next time you visit Niagara.

Hotel staff were friendly, presenting cookies at check in. Room/bathroom need updating, No fridges or microwaves, Beds were comfy. Not convinced the linens were clean though!Hotel was noisy (outside noise as well as doors slamming etc) Breakfast was basic continental and adequate in the small breakfast room. There is a pub style restaurant next door. We were there to enjoy the fabulicious festival at the wineries. Some of the hotels do offer shuttle services but not this one. The cab service in town, although friendly, is over stretched and unreliable. This hotel needs to offer a shuttle service to the local wineries! It is about a 5 block walk to the downtown core from this hotel with areas where there are no sidewalks.

Looking forward to our visit to Niagara on the Lake, and the "premium" room at the Best Western ... Clean grounds and parking lot on arrival! Front desk staff on check in were pleasant and helpful (and fresh baked cookies), not a complaint with them at check out either! The room, a premium, king size bed, fire place, jacuzzi tub... rather tired indeed. Carpet and furniture very tired, to open the door to the fridge,,, stick your finger in the wood door hole and pull. Fireplace was a nice touch,,, perhaps remove the melted plastic from the front of it. Jacuzzi tub very beat up,,, not a chance of using that, lots of hot water, with pressure, a bonus! The heat light always an added bonus when you step out of the shower, too bad it didn't work. Breakfast was excellent, small room, but clean and well attended by the staff. Good variety and selection of food. This room is in dire need of a touch up if they are going to charge a premium rate for it!

Room Tip: If you enjoy a good nights "quiet" sleep, avoid rooms 101 and 201. next to the stairwell...

Thank you for letting us know how your stay was as guest feedback always helps us to improve. I am glad you liked the staff and our complimentary breakfast. I am sorry to hear that our King room was not up to your expectations. Please know now that we are in our slower time of year we will be using that time to update our rooms. All guest bathrooms will be updated along with some carpets and dressers including the room you stayed in. And we will have the other guest room issues taken care of. We hope you will stay with us again so that you can see the improvements we'll have had done.

We returned this year around the same time and were so pleasantly surprised. The entire experience was 110% improved. The front desk people are and were very friendly. However last year we had issues. This year we were very happy with our stay in every way. Most definately the rooms were in much better shape. Lovely stay.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this hotel. It was a nice quiet hotel. We rented 5 rooms in all and everyone was happy with the place. The location was nice and easy to find. The breakfast was nice for everyone I had a little hard time finding something I could because of a food intolerance, but that was not the hotels fault.
