“Wonderful hotel”
Reviewed 1 March 2009

We have stayed at this hotel a number of times and would recommend it to anyone travelling to Niagara on the Lake.

It's in a great location, only a few minutes' walk to downtown NOTL and close to many wineries.

We keep going back because of 2 things - the value and the service. It's far less expensive than any of the other hotels or B&B's in NOTL but such a great place! The service is great - as I said, we've stayed there a number of times and we receive a warm "Welcome back," every time we check in. It's so nice to be acknowledged as a repeat visitor.

The continental breakfast is also really good. Pretty much anything you would want from a continental breakfast and very well stocked. I've been to some where everything is so picked over that you're pretty much stuck with toast or a packaged danish. Not this one!

There's also a really good sports bar (Butlers) right next door, if you're looking for some cheap, decent pub food.

We stay at the Colonel Butler every time we're in NOTL and have had nothing but great experiences.

Was a great hotel, close walk to town. Was quite less money than other more pricey inn's and B+B's. I am not into B+B's, so this was great, still got a great room and breakfast! Rooms were very quiet and well equipped. Continental breakfast was so much nicer than other hotels, made our own waffles!! Would definitely recommend this hotel!

Fantastic friendly staff, happy to help and advise. Stayed for only one night unfortunately as they were fully booked the following night. Breakfasts are absolutely superb... Make your own waffles, cereals, fruit, selection of breads etc. Rooms are large and quiet. Excellent value overall. Recommended for all ages.

This hotel is a decent value in a VERY expensive town. The location is just over a half-mile from the center of town. We love walking, and we walked it several times. An okay stay but a few problems..

I was turned off at first by the front desk person who was on the phone when I walked up to the desk in the tiny lobby area. She looked up and saw me but ignored me. It would have been perfectly okay if I'd been told that she'd be with me in a few minutes. After quite some time of being ignored (maybe 10 minutes), I walked out of the hotel and went to the car thinking that I should not register at all. Since it was difficult to get reservations in the area, I decided to come back to register, but there was no apology at all. Not off to a good start!

Our room and small bathroom were very clean, but, as another reviewer has said, the decor is tired. Not a huge problem. The rooms were pretty well sound-proofed except for some noise from the hall when guests were checking in late in the evening.

The breakfast was a bit better than the average continental breakfast. Fruit was nice and fresh, and the waffles were good. Eggs and warm muffins were welcome items on the buffet, and the breakfast person was friendly.

There is a Tim Horton across the street as well as another small family restaurant. There are two ATMs within a block of the hotel.

There is wireless Internet availability in the hotel (and wired connections in a few rooms), but after several tries, I was not able to connect to the wireless network. The staff were helpful, but my computer was saying that the signal was weak. I haven't had a problem connecting in other hotels.

Niagara on the Lake is a beautiful little town, and for the most part we enjoyed our stay. At about $200/night we felt that the hotel could have been better. On a future stay we'd probably look for another hotel even if it was even farther from the center of town.

Good location - very close to the shops and restaurants but not close enough to walk. Room was very clean but also very tired. Staff was friendly and helpful.

We were originally planning to stay at Hilton Garden Inn but this was $60 less per night and much closer to town.

My boyfriend is a farmer and this was our first weekend away and his first weekend off in over 6 months. We wanted to get away relax and but still have a good time.

After checking out many properties in the Niagra On The Lake area we decided to choose the Colonel Butler because of the price, wow were we happy we did.

LOCATION: The hotel is just off the main strip, about a 3 min drive I would say a 15min walk. We were here in the off season and it was a cold weekend so we choose to drive but it would be a nice walk in the warmer months. There is a Tim Hortons, a family style restaurant, a Sunoco and a Sports Bar all within feet of the hotel.

CHECKING IN: We had no problem checking in and actually arrived early but thought we'd stop in to see if our room might be ready a little early, they were more then happy to accomidate us and had us up in our room in no time.

THE ROOM: we stayed in a king suite and it was phenominal. The room is HUGE there was a very comfortable King Bed and then almost the size of another full room that has a fireplace, a sitting area and the tv. The bathroom is a little on the small side but who hangs out in their bathroom. They also had a small vanity outside the bathroom which was perfect.

THE SERVICE: everyone at this hotel is so friendly, they went out of their way to make us feel welcomed and when we inquired about restaurants not only did they have lots of personal knowledge on all of them but also had the menues of almost all the restaurants. They offered to make us reservations and when we arrived back at the hotel made it a point to ask how our dinner was. Very, very friendly!

I would highly reccommend this hotel to anyone who is looking to stay in the area the prices are great but importantly the staff are phenominal.

Thanks for making our weekend away a great one!

* If you are doing a wine tour while here I would highly recommend going to Hillebrand and doing the Art of Red Wine Session. For $25 you get a little mini tour, a wine tasting and get to make your own blend of red wine to take home. It is so much fun (and I'm not even a fan of red wine) and definatly something you MUST do!
