The family get-together for the weekend was fantastic except for the room at Ben Brae. We ended up in the small room on the lower lever. This room is approximately 8' x 8', smaller than a walk-in closet. It must have been a small study when the house was originally built. The bed fills the entire room and leaves little room to walk within. There is a small closet, but the door does not even open fully to allow one to store their suitcase. The room is so small that when you try to sleep it feels as if the walls are closing in on you. To make matters worse, the shower was also miniature. You constantly hit your elbows on the walls. Note - this is coming from a person who is only 5 foot tall!
We immediately made reservations for our second night at another place in town and when we tried to just pay for the first night we were told payment would still be required for two nights, which was disappointing.
The breakfast was unremarkable. We had informed the host we did not eat dairy, which includes yogurt, milk, cheese and butter. None the less we were served fresh fruit smothered in yogurt, and egg and herb (?) omelet, and toast smothered in metled butter. Coffee was available as long as you only wanted a cup.
All in all, one deserves to stay in a proper room. This felt more like a punishment. Would not recommend this to anyone.
