Owner description: One of the oldest landmarks in Ottawa, this canal is filled with boats in the summer and becomes the "World's Longest Skating Rink" in the winter.

This is a fantastic spectacle and so English in characature. The locks which rise from the Ottowa River are obviously true british engineering. The Canal's purpose was military rather than trade but is now a great tourist and pleasure attraction, just like many canals in the UK.

Unfortunately for me, the beautiful Rideau Canal was not frozen in late November. I had hoped to see everyone skating on the canal, and maybe even have a go myself.
Next time I hope to come back later in the year.

I used to work for Parks Canada and I was there when they celebrated it's 175th anniversary as well as when it was decorated as a world historic site. I had the honor to act in plays in various locations near the Rideau Canal as well as the Rideau River (Ottawa, Kingston, Merrickville, Jones Falls, Perth, etc.). All the above locations are beautiful and worth visiting.

We did plays about the history of the Rideau Canal. And it truly is an amazing story. No wonder it's a world historic site! It's an overwhelming man made structure.

The lock system is genuine and still works today - the mecanics are pretty cool and it's interesting the see the boats go from one lock to another (especially at the Ottawa locks).

During summer time (in Ottawa), you can have boat tours on the canal!

Again in Ottawa, during the winter time, you can skate on the frozen canal! It's really cool. As a local, I enjoy going for a skate, grab a Beaver Tail (hot pastry) and a cup of hot chocolate every once in a while... Especially during Winterlude (a winter festival that starts in early February).

What's sad, is that as the years go by, with the global warming and all, you can't enjoy the frozen canal as much. Last year, the canal was opened for only 10 consecutive days!
