Beautiful walking path (nicer on the east side of the canal). Boat tours at a reasonable price. Frequent bridges but never one at the exact spot you need it! Fun to see pleasure craft of all sizes plying the canal. There are several cafes along the way, including one at the Somerset bridge with an adult-size sandbox with lawn chairs to simulate beach. Please frequent this since it took a decade and hundreds of lives to build!

“Great learning experience”
Reviewed 14 July 2014

After we watched the Changing of the guards, we moved on to this site. We were able to see the operation of loaded and released of water thru different locks ( mini version of the Panama canal ) as couple of boats were going to the river. This is a great experience for my 11 yrs old son as we sat outside the Bytown museum drinking lemonade. For bathroom break, go to the Fairmont hotel that next the canal ( We saw Aretha Franklin as we going into the hotel ).

“8 Locks flat”
Reviewed 12 July 2014

Nice "pop-up" restaurant/pub on the canal just north of the bridge at Somerset. Apparently this is only here for the summer with portable rest rooms and a nice sandy beach spot for the young ones to play in while you enjoy a cold one.

“Fantastic waterway”
Reviewed 11 July 2014

We were lucky enough to be there as a couple of boats were gong through the locks. Lovely to see how they worked and of course there were a lot of photo opportunities. The locks are operated by hand by staff. The open spaces each side of the canals are well maintained and there is a lovely walk along the river front. Very enjoyable time.

interesting history regarding its creation, now a pleasure canal for tourists in Summer, turns into one of the longest skating rinks in the world for Winter, worth a canal boat ride and bicycle/walk
