Rideau Hall is a very nice place to visit in Ottawa. It's where the residence and office of the governor general of Canada (since 1867).

In the big park you can see a lot of trees that have been planted by different famous people like the Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother, Lady Di, Prince Charles, King George VI, Queen Elizabeth II, John F. Kennedy and Jackie, Nixon, Clinton, Kofi Annan, Vladimir Putin, and many others!!!

Worths the visit :D

Rideau hall has two excellent free tours, 1. the building and history and 2. the art. This is primarily the home and workplace of the Governor General of Canada but of course you only see the public rooms. Uniquely Canadian.

This is the official residence of Canada's head of state. The gardens are beautiful and in June you can visit the private gardens on one special weekend. there are often concerts and cricket has been played on the lawns of Rideau Hall for more than 100 years. The public rooms are interesting.

I was able to reach Rideau Hall easily by bus and spent a beautiful, relaxing afternoon, begnning with a walk through the grounds, which are dotted with trees donated by presidents and other dignitaries, a rose garden, and a great life-size "inukshuk" statue. Following that was a very interesting tour of the house provided by a well-informed and enthusiastic guide, and a small but impressive changing of the guard ceremony accompanied by bagpipes. The gift shop, located near the main entrance provided a nice selection of quality Canadian-made items as well as books about Rideau Hall and Canadian history. I would highly recommend a visit to Rideau Hall for a respite from the more hectic Parliament Hill and an intimate view of Canadian history.
