“Nice place to visit”
Reviewed 10 August 2014 via mobile

Rideau Hall is a stop on the hop-on-hop-off tour and a lovely place to visit. It is the residence of the Governor General of Canada. There are guards at the front gates that are like those at Buckingham Palace (the don't move). They do the changing of the guards every hour. We went on a free guided tour which was really good, however you aren't permitted to take photographs and the tours are quite long (photos are allowed when the open house is on which is after 3pm). The grounds are lovely too. Only downfall is there is nothing close by to eat, so eat before you get there and it's not really walking distance from anything in Ottawa. You need to drive or get the hop-on-hop-off your so plan your trip and times as they only drop off and pick up every hour!

Thank you for your review – these are really helpful tips for other visitors! The challenge with the hop-on-hop-off is always to try and see everything before the next bus arrives, and it seems you managed to do just that. We hope to welcome you back the next time you visit!

“Great Tour!”
Reviewed 7 August 2014

I learned a lot about the place where the general governor lives. The tour guider explained a lot of details about the building and the rooms we visited. The guider was very nice and polite. The tour had no cost. No pictures were allowed to be taken which is reasonable. I would go back again and get another tour. The place was fascinating.

“Free!”
Reviewed 6 August 2014 via mobile

I thought this was interesting as the head of state of Canada's home. There are impressive public spaces for dining, receptions and entertaining. You also get some history on the position, its occupants, and the spouses of the governors general.

“Rideau Hall- the governor generals residence”
Reviewed 5 August 2014

This is a historic site on the banks of the Ottawa river. An 1838 residence
We did not have access to the actual Governor Generals House-Rideau Hall but the grounds were superb. Each tree had a commemorative name of the person and country of the person who planted it.
There is the changing of the guards at 10 am, About half a dozen Grenadeir guards march to the front gate, then the remainder back to the two sentry boxes on either side of the main door of the hall. thence they go off to their accommodation area.
There is a visitors centre, a totem pole, some other artifacts and plenty of squirrels. We even saw a fox sleeping in one of the smaller gardens, oblivious to the visitors. This can be a relaxing venue for a walk amongst the trees. The weather in July was good about 28 degrees C..

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. I am sorry you did not get to go on a guided tour of the residence – in the summer months, they are usually available between 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. It is great that you visited the grounds on such a lovely day!
