You must be patient to read everything in the museum but if you are a visual person, this is for you too! You can go through the museum pretty quick and if some part of the war history does not interest you, you can skip easily.

But I have to tell you, everything there needs to be seen and read!

Excellent for all ages and for any level of knowledge on the history of war for Canada and Canadians. You can walk through trenches, view old war-era vehicles (from tanks to planes to trucks), and read small pieces of history that normally would have been lost - old letters from children to fathers on the front, and so forth. It was great, I've been before and I will go again. My favourite part is the veterans that volunteer and walk through the museum, always willing to chat about their experiences or share knowledge.

I am not a museum person but was here for four hours. It was so well done, educational. The displays were amazing. Would highly recommend any families visiting Ottawa to go. It is a great, interesting history lesson.

If you are acclimated to visit Cooperstown and other better known hall of fame centers dedicated to professional sports then change your allegiance for a short time because you must visit this place for it is a hall of fame of a much different type. People are enshrined here for deeds that far surpass in importance whatever your favorite foot ball or soccer player or ice hockey or baseball player did on the playing field to win a game or qualify for a trophy or win a championship. If you are in the national capital for a few days I encourage you to find and take time - maybe an afternoon - to visit this museum and acknowledge the heroics performed by the soldiers in so many of the wars that are part of Canada's history. Walk there westward down Wellington and look at the municipal landscape. I did approach the museum on foot from the eastern part of Wellington after having seen the Supreme Court. You can talk for days about why the changing of the guard ceremonies on Parliament Hill are important for visitors to Canada. But a visit here with good intentions will give you much more to talk about. A visit here will cause you to ask questions about important matters of life for here the serious matters of life do not take a back seat to anything else. I have visited the museums dedicated to the opposition to the Nazis in Europe. I have visited war museums in other cities like London and in France or Belgium. The Imperial War Museum has its pomp and ceremony too but it has so much depth and content that it will humble you. Like wise with the impact of this museum. Its content will wear you out as you try to keep up with and remember what you might not have studied in school. You might make a comparison between those places and this place for all that those comparisons are worth. I did think about the Imperial War Museum. If you need a reason to get a college degree or to obtain a concentration of advanced courses in the study of modern history then here it is in abundance. A place like this will allow you to be an intellectual with an effort to pursue intellectual interests as part of your tour of this part of Ottawa. Selling balloons and eating popsicles can take place elsewhere at another time. This is for serious matters. A visit here certainly will cause you to praise yourself for being a history major and for earning a degree in the discipline. I suggest that you might need four, five or more hours to take a preliminary tour of the place and then to return later for a second visit. Perhaps this might parallel your visit to the National Museum of Canadian history in Gattineau. I can see why it would re-enforce it but this place deserves to be seen for its own merit and purpose. Learn about the War of 1812 and Canada's role in the first world wars. If you have visited the allied cemeteries in Normandy, France than you will fully appreciate the importance of this museum. This is required viewing and visiting. I had the same reaction here as I did when I walked out of the smaller European war museums. No need for asking if the New York Rangers or the Montreal Canadiens won. It was much the same as when I left the Dachau concentration camp in 1971 for I had the same reaction. I was not the same person coming out as when I went in. The content of this museum was large enough to numb me for hours and preclude purchasing or buying a frozen custard or ice cream bar. I did not ask what was the favorite flavor of the day. If there is a place where you can say aloud in Canada what is more important than ice hockey here it is. Highly recommended for all serious visitors to Canada. There is component of comparative history here for you might want to know what was the Canadian perspective on these many wars the their country men fought. Shuttle bus or a flight to the allied cemeteries in Normandy should be part of the any deluxe package of special treats to make this visit here more important and relevant. While the Imperial War Museum in London does deserve commentary here I would say that the cemeteries in Normandy France deserve more. I did enjoy looking at military machines and weapons like tanks and ships and other items and you might enjoy that part of the visit too. After a while the maps come in handy for knowing where these men fought and utilized these weapons. Go to see this place and stay for an entire afternoon. For my visits to Ottawa the visit here was on the same level of importance as the two tours of Parliament which I took there years ago. But the one dwarfs the other for an impact on my mind.

Took my 2 sons (ages 11 and 14) here the other day. Was totally impressed with the level of interaction with the exhibits. Very well organized and reasonably priced. Boys especially loved wandering around LeBreton Gallery with full sized real military vehicles (tanks, trucks) as well as cannons and mortars. Veterans and other volunteers are in museum to share stories of the time period that you are looking at. Lots of artifacts, video clips, audio files etc.
