We have visited a few of the war museums in France, so this was an interesting follow-up. The main displays are divided into four sections, beginning with early conflicts, into the First and Second World Wars and finally finishing with modern conflicts. They also have a large gallery toward the back with a number of vehicles, artillery, etc. from various time periods. This is the largest collection of that type that we had seen. I particularly found the tanks interesting as they progressed from some very early models up to a recent Russian tank from Afghanistan. We spent just over three hours there, which allowed us to get a look at everything, but you could easily spend an entire day if you wanted to.

A wonderful museum with so much depth of information and displays. There are interactive displays where you can hear eye witness accounts; rare photographs such as Cdn militiamen at the Boer War of 1899; life sized models; actual footage from Seminal moments in Canadian history such as the D-Day landings; photos, soldiers's letters and diaries, soldier uniforms through the ages, primitive battlefield medical kits, 3D models of actual battlefields. There are also volunteers and actual Veterans that'll provide more personalized info. Also, it was wonderful to try on WWI era helmets and do a walk through of a dingy, dark WWI trench. There are actual tanks at the lebreton gallery and the actual Mercedes car used by Hitler! Be prepared to spend at least 3hrs here, as there's a wealth of info that you don't want to miss (comfy shoes and water bottles are a must). Seeing Canada's development into an independent and democratic nation and seeing it's contribution in major wars throughout the last 300 years that has shaped world history and politics, is fascinating! We visited on Canada Day so we had free admission!

Whoever set up the Canada War Museum put in a solid effort but there's just not enough there to justify paying for the visit. We went on Canada Day when it was free and even then it was underwhelming so I can't imagine ever paying money for it. They have a few worthwhile artifacts here and there (some weapons and uniforms) but most of it is just written/photo/video displays. Probably the most interesting part is the room of military vehicles which was the saving grace for this not getting a failing score. Why would I want to see a ten year old looping video interview with a war veteran when I can do the same thing on the Internet? Also lots of families with small children roaring around and causing headaches. A big annoyance also was that they do not clearly match displayed artifacts with dates so if you see a case of medals for instance you have to hunt around the (very small and dark) text to get information.

Had the honor of visiting the museum on the 23 of June 2014.
The friendly staff greeted us with a smile and great assistance to our group
as we were not familiar with the area, they made us feel welcomed and very comfortable .
We enjoyed the fact that you have lots of space for people to get around you and go to your own pace
So much to see, and to learn about our history that was not taught in school.
Every school in Canada should send there students there for a visit.
It give you a felling of pride to be Canadian.
A must see when in Ottawa.

I had an amazing time, I learnt a lot. They have amazing artefacts such as an enigma typewriter and one of Hitler's cars !
The way it is set up makes you feel as if you had been there!
