Owner description: ESTABLISHED by Lt-Col. John By in 1826, the ByWard Market is one of Canada's oldest and largest public markets. The legendary builder of the Rideau Canal, Colonel By himself laid out the street plan of the Market, designating George Street and York Street to be extra wide to accommodate the creation of a public market and gathering place. WITHIN an area roughly four blocks square, you'll find museums, cafes, specialty food shops, boutiques, galleries, restaurants, pubs, hair & aesthetics salons and more! Easily accessible on foot, by transit or by car, the ByWard Market offers a unique experience for all.

“so much to choose from”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 August 2011

Love the Byward Market! Got some great deals on fresh strawberries (I bought a flat) and wild blueberries (which we don't find much in the Toronto area). Its also such a fun place to walk around trying different foods and looking for interesting items to purchase. There's a lot of people watching going on here and you could spend hours schlepping around and just taking it all in. There's also street performers, clothing, bakeries, etc. Its overall a really great day out!

The byward market was a complete surprise in the political heart of Canada - so many great bars, restaurants and a neat little market... don't miss it!

“Something for everyone”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 July 2011

Plenty of shopping with something for everyone and restaurants for every taste bud. You've got to leave room for desert at the wonderful pastry shop!
Lots of entertainment at every street corner
