Owner description: ESTABLISHED by Lt-Col. John By in 1826, the ByWard Market is one of Canada's oldest and largest public markets. The legendary builder of the Rideau Canal, Colonel By himself laid out the street plan of the Market, designating George Street and York Street to be extra wide to accommodate the creation of a public market and gathering place. WITHIN an area roughly four blocks square, you'll find museums, cafes, specialty food shops, boutiques, galleries, restaurants, pubs, hair & aesthetics salons and more! Easily accessible on foot, by transit or by car, the ByWard Market offers a unique experience for all.

“Boutique Stores, Artisan Shops, Farmers Market!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 September 2013

Cute boutique stores to get small souvenir items.

Artisan shops that sell bagels, pastries, candies, cheese etc. You won't go hungry here! Plus you can buy little snacks to bring with you back to your hotel.

Farmers market (especially between spring - fall) have a beautiful array of fruits and vegetables. Very friendly shopkeepers who are most likely to be farmers of the produce. Local berries and peaches are to die for!

“Smashing Fish n Chips”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 September 2013

We enjoyed wandering around the area and the market, we particularly enjoyed the English style Fish n Chips (sorry I can't bring myself round to saying Fish n Fries!). We were served quickly with freshly cooked food by a peasant young lady in a busy, clean FnC cafe, didn't get the name but I think there's only the one. Interesting to walk around this area and just look, lots of other shops nearby including a Bay and the Rideau Centre, a shopping mall. Not far to walk to the Rideau Canal locks and the Government buildings, Parliament Hill etc.

“Fun Times”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 September 2013

We spent an afternoon strolling around the market enjoying the various vendors and food. It has a little bit of everything. Yes, it can get quite crouded so go with that in mind. We enjoyed our time and had great fun chatting with locals and other tourists.

“Don't miss it!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 September 2013

If you come to Ottawa this area is a must see. The restaurant, shops and market as well as the nightlife give visitors lots to see and do. Something for everyone, lots of pubs as well if you need a little refreshment. If you need some fresh vegetables, fruit, cheeses etc. you can find it all here.

“Only in Ottawa would something like this be a highlight”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 September 2013

This area is the pits: panhandlers, drug dealers, drug users, cheap restaurants, cheap stores (except along Sussex). Architecturally a wasteland.
Not worth the detour.
