Owner description: WITHIN an area roughly four blocks square, you'll find museums, cafes, specialty food shops, boutiques, galleries, restaurants, pubs, hair & aesthetics salons and more! Easily accessible on foot, by transit or by car, the ByWard Market offers a unique experience for all. ESTABLISHED by Lt-Col. John By in 1826, the ByWard Market is one of Canada's oldest and largest public markets. The legendary builder of the Rideau Canal, Colonel By himself laid out the street plan of the Market, designating George Street and York Street to be extra wide to accommodate the creation of a public market and gathering place.

“Great Market to stroll through”

If you are a tourist or resident of Ottawa a visit to the delightful downtown market is a must, even when you are not buying. The stalls have a variety of merchandise for sale depending on the season. Vegetables, fruits, herbs, flowers, maple syrup etc. are beautifully displayed and as such, are very tempting but always fun to even just wander past. The items for sale are always grade A so if you are a resident of the Ottawa area, do some shopping and support the local farmers. There are lots of delightful restaurants, breads and pastry shops cheese vendors, boutiques for gifts that line the market street and there are some inside one of the market buildings. This is also a great place to have a meal or to just stop and have coffee. we always enjoy our visits to this market.

“Average”

If you need to cut something from your to do list it's safe to say this is the one. It's nothing unique from any other city with a similar style market. Winnipeg has the forks, Toronto has Kensington Market, Ottawa - Byward. Cool shops but lots of the same stuff sold everywhere.

“Love the Area”
Reviewed 28 September 2013

I really love this area of Ottawa. It's near Rideau Center and you can find many different restaurants, stores and the ByWard Market. You can buy your groceries, fresh fruit or vegetables in the stores surrounding the market and get lunch or dinner from the Market. There's something for every budget. At night the area becomes very lively thanks to all the bars and upscale restaurants. Really nice even if you're just wandering the streets.

“Great area”

Numerous great restaurants of all types. Park your car around the edge and walk. Very busy and a few panhandlers but great food.

“Small but worth visiting”
Reviewed 26 September 2013

Byward market is easily located and the street vendors sell an array of things from jewellery to vegetables. Some very nice items can be found. It is quite quick to walk around the market area.
