Owner description: WITHIN an area roughly four blocks square, you'll find museums, cafes, specialty food shops, boutiques, galleries, restaurants, pubs, hair & aesthetics salons and more! Easily accessible on foot, by transit or by car, the ByWard Market offers a unique experience for all. ESTABLISHED by Lt-Col. John By in 1826, the ByWard Market is one of Canada's oldest and largest public markets. The legendary builder of the Rideau Canal, Colonel By himself laid out the street plan of the Market, designating George Street and York Street to be extra wide to accommodate the creation of a public market and gathering place.

Well you want to see the Parliament Buildings of course in our (Canada) nation's capital. But you cannot miss the charming Byward market within walking distance of Parliament just past the Rideau canal (As a side note, we walked from out hotel to a football game at the new TD Place along the canal, nice stroll especially at this time of year, lots of boats to see).
Byward Market has LOTS of restaurant options (we just had breakfast at one of the many patios), but also a great place for fresh local produce, browsing, people-watching and don't forget a Beaver Tail for a treat!

We never miss a chance to wander around the Market when we're in town. The buskers are a favourite of our daughter and we love all the shops, the vendors and the food.

The ByWard market is a eclectic outdoor market in Ottawa filled with restaurants, bars, shops and of course the farmers market. Lots of fresh local fruits and vegetables as well as honey, soaps, jewellery, maple syrup and clothing boutiques. Buskers for the kids and entertainment for everyone. Lots of fun for the whole family.

Was pumped to go, got there and phttttt! A big let down, because there were some sketchy places selling junk. And some tiny eateries selling lousy food. It just shows you how incredibly dull Ottawa is if this is recommended as a top Ottawa attraction. Honestly don't waste your time!

A visit to Ottawa is not complete without a visit to the ByWard market. Great restaurants, lots of activity with buskers and such and just a great 'vibe' to the area. On a nice night - this is a great area to stroll around and mingle, or find a nice patio and enjoy a beverage. Oh - make sure you grab a Beavertail when there!! Just a really cool part of downtown Ottawa.
