Owner description: WITHIN an area roughly four blocks square, you'll find museums, cafes, specialty food shops, boutiques, galleries, restaurants, pubs, hair & aesthetics salons and more! Easily accessible on foot, by transit or by car, the ByWard Market offers a unique experience for all. ESTABLISHED by Lt-Col. John By in 1826, the ByWard Market is one of Canada's oldest and largest public markets. The legendary builder of the Rideau Canal, Colonel By himself laid out the street plan of the Market, designating George Street and York Street to be extra wide to accommodate the creation of a public market and gathering place.

We stopped by here for lunch. We parked our car in one of the council owned car parks in the market, our car was broken into and a significant amount of stuff stolen. On investigation it is well known amongst locals that thieves operate in the car parks, there had been 30-40 in the last week alone in the car park we used. The council are only prepared to pay the security company for 8 hours a day and they have several car parks to patrol with very limited resources.

I would avoid this area at all costs if you need to drive and park there.

I haven't been here in four years and I was surprised by the increase in prices. I had a draft beer and it cost me $7.50. The price of parking is also out of sight. I don't think I will return. There also is very little English spoken here.

Give this market a try. Tons of fresh fruit, vegetable, and flower stands. Lots of wonderful jewellery, hand crafted items, ethnic foods, and so much more. There are loads of little kiosks. Definitely work stopping by. We did park in a parkade with costed about $12 for the day. There is street parking that fills up quickly.

We totally enjoyed the Byward Market area. Shops and vendors were interesting and diverse. Where else can you get a beavertail, homemade ice cream, and an Obama cookie all in one afternoon? The street performers were fun, and the entertainment at night around the restaurants pretty darn good. Spent many fun hours at the Byward.

While the Byward Market itself offers primarily trinkets and souvenirs beyond the grocery and street food offerings, a few blocks walk around the area will let you encounter a good variety of of both clothing boutiques and home specialty stores as well as numerous art galleries. Prices are lower than in some larger cities and there are some very good buys. The area is upscale without being snooty. In addition, there are some nice old stone and brick houses and commercial buildings from Ottawa's early years.
