“Location Location Location.... but.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 July 2014

This was our second stay at the Residence & Conference Centre ( also known as St Paul's University Residence ) The location is the best thing about this hotel. Price is cheap, so I guess you get what you paid for. Although we had a very nasty surprise upon arrival. We checked in , we're given our key card - and when we went into the room, it was already occupied ! Luckily the guests were not in their room - imagine if they had been ! And the front desk gave some lame excuse about ' them not checking out when supposed to '. But all I could worry about was how often does this happen ! We were given a new room - which had no shower curtain. The poor house cleaner ( the only one for the whole residence ) finally found one , but it was stinky , so we complained and did finally get a new one.
The whole room had a smell to it - sour . and was not too clean. And even though we stayed 3 nights, house cleaning only came in once. The towels are thread bare and linty - watch out if you like to wear black . The shower stall is super tiny and be prepared for a watery bathroom floor after. The rooms are suites, so there is a small kitchen with microwave and fridge. Plus two bedrooms if your traveling with kids or friends.
It is a residence that is used by students for most of the year, but I think they need to step up the cleaning and maintenance of the building. Everything is getting a bit dated.
That being said, their is a free breakfast - usual fare . And a small fitness room.
The location is terrific. Right off of Bank St. Leave the car at the residence ( free parking ) and take the 20 walk along the canal to downtown Ottawa.
I still recommend this hotel for anyone on a budget and not too fussy about cleanliness.

Room Tip: Cheap , great location , but not too clean

Went for a short trip to Ottawa-- stayed 2 nights with my husband and 2 kids (4.5 and 2). 2 separate BR, small kitchenette area (fridge, sink, microwave) and bathroom (right off the entrance). I was able to put the playpen in one of the BR-- fit snugly in the closet area. We had a camping cot that our older son slept on-- he loved it-- and it fit between the desk and bed with some room for me to walk if I got up. TVs in both room, AC worked fine. We ate out (take-out) both nights, used the 4th floor lounge area. We were on the 3rd floor and could sort of use the wifi from the 4th floor. Staff were friendly. Breakfast was basic-- bagels, toast, fruit, yogurt, cereal and coffee/tea and juices. Able to snag some extra fruit for snack for the day. I would totally book this again and bring some pots, plates/bowls/ utensils and cook in the lounge area to save money. Got pricey with take-out.

Very basic accommodations but for the price, especially if you are sharing like we were (me, my g/f, my sis & her boyfriend), it was a very valuable option. The four of us split the cost, $88 split 4-ways, the is no other cheaper option in Ottawa.
Both bedrooms have a tv, there is one bathroom with a shower. The bedrooms are small but spacious enough. The kitchen has a good sized fridge but is very small. Beds were comfy enough. No wifi in the rooms, wifi downstairs was ok at best. Free parking and we were provided with a complementary parking pass for the second car. A bit hard to find at first, it is behind the saint marie university campus. Free breakfast, was good. Better than most hostel breakfasts but not as good as restaurant brunch options.
As others have noticed, it is a student residence throughout the school year. But if I was visiting Ottawa again, I would book here, no questions asked.

Really, the only bad thing about this place is that it is hard to find. It is behind the University. Otherwise, it really is nice.

We had a very large two bedroom with a nice view of Ottawa. The staff was all great. You are located roughly 1.5 miles from everything. Rideau Canal, The Peace Tower, Parliament Hill, The National Gallery of Canada, etc.

I'd definitely book this place again if the need arises. They did say they are almost always fully booked, so book in advance if you are looking for a great price on a nice room!

Room Tip: Ask for something facing the city for a nice view of the skyline as well as the sunset!

During the year it is a student residence, but they do a great job in transforming it into a hotel for the summer. My wife, her mother, our baby daughter and I visited Ottawa and for us, the suite layout - with two separate bedrooms, a kitchen in between (fridge, microwave) was ideal for the two nights we stayed there.

Each of the two bedrooms that form the suite has a queen sized bed, a large desk, TV, drawers and a warderobe. One insuite washrooms may be not ideal for a family, but there are more (clean) washrooms (toilets) downstairs, so in cases of emergency doable.

We were there already in 2011, and they have improved considerably since then. New furniture, new TVs (as far as I can remember), a redesigned breakfast room (all glass with a nice view towards the garden). The breakfast is free, with various coffees and teas, cereals, breads, jam, butter, yoghurt etc. OK from my point of view, I just wished they had at least something NOT sweet (like the small patee packs they have in Europe).

Excellent staff, I take it it's students, but they behave professionally, courteous, well-trained, and helpful.

The rooms were both times we were there very clean, actually cleaner than many year-round good hotels I have been staying.
Of course, you cant expect all amenities of a 4* hotel, but the value is phantastic, and it's location is convenient for visiting Ottawa, as it is just a 5 minutes drive from Parliament hill.

FREE PARKING!

INternet is cable-bound in the rooms, downstairs they have WIFI, didnt work well with my laptop though.

My stay at the Saint Paul residence has been very comfortable. The staff are great, especially the breakfast worker (Mike)!

There is only WIFI in the lobby and the lounges, but rooms have wired internet.

If you're looking for a cheap, safe, clean and friendly place to stay, St. Paul residence is the place!

I loved the location-on bus route to city center and central station, close to Rideau Canal.
Pity that some basics were not made available-kettle,knife,fork,bottle opener.
Breakfast was excellent and laundry room was first class. The staff were helpful.
